Have any rules been made for adapting the Archetypes’ gear to more historical times? I want to play a game set in 19th century London, but I’m not sure how to augment the items given to each archetype so they’d fit the time period.

  1. I’ve actually ran a few sessions set in the Wild West and really almost no gear changes were needed. I added the +reload tag to a couple of the firearms but that was it.

  2. The equivalent to a cell phone could be easy access to a telegraph office, or (for wealthier folk) a private messenger service–or, like Sherlock Holmes, a team of street urchins who carry messages.

A nice car could be replaced by a carriage, lesser vehicles might be represented by access to wagons or carts associated with a drayage company or some other business. A bicycle might replace a car for an educated or avant garde type, or a suffragette. Everyone else takes Hansom cabs or walks.

  3. When we started playing using the playtest material I allowed the players to choose their gear based on their background. I still allow them let stuff “appear” when it fits their description.

With that in mind, I would also translate the gear to a era-specific analogue. Just make it cool and fitting to the character and everybody should be fine. Urban Shadows characters are not really defined by their gear anyway.
