Today, February 3rd, is Setsubun (節分) here in Japan. It’s the day before the first day of spring, and is part of “haru matsuri”, the Spring Festival (春祭). Traditionally it was kind of a New Year’s Eve and it has an associated ritual, involving throwing beans, to cast out last year’s bad luck and keep evil spirits away for the current year.

One of the most iconic evil spirits here are Oni; giant horned monsters clad in animal skins that carry iron spiked clubs, similar to ogres. You see them everywhere for Setsubun, but they’ve taken on a comical and even cute appearance in modern times.

In honour of Setsubun I’m releasing a new version of my Oni Skin for Monsterhearts. There have been a few minor changes from the previous version (which was released about three years ago), but most of it is the same as before. The Oni was my first completely original Skin and has gotten a lot of positive comments, but, as always, feedback is greatly appreciated. Happy spring!

  1. I’ve been enjoying the original but knew it was incomplete. It’s great to finally have the final version. It’s a nice well balanced skin that manages to put a different spin on bullying than other bully based skins. I sort of want to run a gang of bullies in MH using the various skins.
