It’s not nitpicky to complain that text isn’t actually readable. The game itself is excellent, but as a book, it has serious issues. I’m very much looking forward to the promised black-on-white version, because the current white-on-black is just too hard on my eyes.

  2. Simon Geard hey man. If you can’t read it that’s legit. I mostly saw people complaining about the type of font and the overall look of the font. Not whether they could read jt or not.

  3. As I read through the book, I find it very tough to read on a tablet, specifically an iPad. I understand the design intent was (I’m guessing) to replicate the general look-and-feel of a terminal, but to be blunt, it doesn’t work. The sheer volume of black on the page is distracting and makes the pages look like a website from the mid-2000’s. The blue hyperlinks are nearly illegible, again on the iPad. While it’s noticeably better reading on the laptop, that’s just not where I generally read things. (Heck, I had UW open on the iPad during the session Chalice In Chains ran us through.)

The kerning for the font is another issue that makes it tough to read (although the leading somewhat helps with legibility). It’s just too tight.

While I appreciate the designers intent – and it does look cool, style over substance is obviously an important part of the cyberpunk genre. But it really shouldn’t be part of a cyberpunk rulebook.

I think there are two separate problems. One is the styling used in the headings, where the text is very compacted with letters overlapping – I think that’s a little ugly, but I can read it fine.

But the other problem is the contrast of white text on black background, which, on a computer screen, is something I find extremely hard on the eyes. It’s not that I can’t read it at all, but it’s very uncomfortable to do so for more than a few sentences at a time.
