  1. You mention that “space opera” evokes the idea of aliens and androids. I don’t believe that is true. “Space opera” is a specific type of story told in a scifi setting, generally character focused, who are usually human.

  2. Note two on the “Something breaks” part which you spend a lot of ink on.

    > During the course of the game, when a player notices that any character’s actions fulfills their chosen trigger, every character gains 1 experience point (xp).

A character has to take an action that causes something to break.

  3. Thanks Brian, I appreciate the feedback. (Already read it yesterday, was wondering if you were going to post it here :P)

Fair point about missed opportunity. As a first game, there’s of course going to be things that I neglected. I appreciate this kind of feedback so that it can inform future projects. 🙂

Side note: Aaron Griffin is correct about the xp triggers; all triggers happen when they are the result or consequence of a character’s actions. (Not to say that “something breaks” can’t be an unintended side-effect of another action, just that the result should stem directly from the character’s actions)

  4. Aaron Griffin The first thing one of my players asked about was making an Android. It was also among the first things I thought about and decided to have or not have. So maybe not technically, but people have impressions of the genre.

  5. Scott Maclure I know. My players are used to D&D. Picking race, class, background and tons of spells. Handing them a playbook was something they weren’t used to. I hope to revisit DW with them.

  6. Note that “Far Beyond Humanity” stretch goal should provide rules on robots and aliens:

“A modular, digital expansion for character creation. New, inhuman Origins; robots, mutants, multiple kinds of alien. New, bizarre and supernatural Career Paths to combine with the base careers; psionics, mutations, mysticism, cybernetics, etc. New upgrades for weapons, loadouts and vehicles; living, phasing, intelligent, shapeshifting and more.”

  7. Scott Maclure Definitely excited for that. Had a player make an Android and I don’t know how to handle it. Just keeping them the same as normal characters for now.

  8. Most narrative based games handle characters like that the same way – there are no mechanics for a thing, it just changes your permission to act in a certain way.

If I say I’m an Android, the GM may give me permission have my Class 2 Firearm purchase simply be a part of my arm that transforms into a laser. Or have a Class 1 Crew of near sentient repair drones that orbit me.

You can make nearly any character with these things as long as you change how actions happen.
