  1. The Playbooks are fine.

    Tables: Things to find in the wilder lands, other families, other people, ancient tech.

  2. 1) Best/most promising:

    I really like the aesthetic of Legacy. I’ve only played in two sessions, which i ran, but i find that it is wide-open enough for us to have lots of creative space, and the character and family playbooks and the moves all provide lots of prompting to improvise good stories.

    I’m most intrigued by the split focus on character/family, and the explicit instruction that while the MC can control NPCs in the family, the Player who created the family makes the overall family decisions. This creates a new layer of play. I really like the PbtA approach of flowing between “in character” and “out of character” interaction, and find adding the family as another meta-character to be challenging, and fun. Especially when a player is interested in introducing tension between their character and their family, and making that tension meaningful!

    2) Lacking in the book:

    I’ll second Pompeius Pomponius here. I like having a few things in random tables, too. Especially as a GM tool for NPCs.

    When i run a game, i usually have the Dungeon World Knacks and Instincts tables close at hand, to quickly put a spin on an NPC that we meet. I’ll also often use the Funnel World character traits to give them a little something extra.

    Together, these help me frame a unique NPC in my mind, and gives a little extra something to put out there for Players to react to. I also find that i remember NPCs much better once i’ve put this little bit of color into them.

    I’d like to see how something similar could help quickly determine characteristics for entire families, giving their general demeanor and indicating the likely predispositions of their individuals.

  3. Random tables (or lists of traits the GM can pick and choose from) could be pretty handy. Out of interest, were the wasteland location and high technology entries in Echoes of the Fall the sort of things you’d be interested in getting more of, or things that are less detailed and more about giving GMs inspiration?

  4. I haven’t delved into Echoes of the Fall yet. I just recently downloaded the stretch goal content from DTRPG, but haven’t taken the time to absorb it.

    i’ll update this response once i’ve done so!

  5. Ah cool – this certainly emphasises to me that when I do a revised edition the stuff in Echoes should be right there in the corebook!

  6. Hm, I think just more of what there is. Also, I’d like to see a campaign. I know that goes against PbtA, but the framework for a campaign could be done. Like a campaign playbook where you check off moves and such, with plot reveals.

  7. Jacob Ross So one game idea I’ve been kicking around (for a different project) is a move-based framework for social change. Essentially there’d be a whole list of individual events, with particular triggers and outcomes, that themselves unlock other events. I feel that Legacy puts a lot of the long-term plot in the player’s hands with The Age Turns, but it’d be interesting to test something like that out.

  8. Just my first thoughts on the matter…

    When I read about the campaign request I thought of Missions / Tasks as requirements for an Age Turn with particular growth and development.

    Example:

    If you think basic civilization mode ages – Stone, Classic, Middle, Enlightened, Industrial, Information, etc. Where in “Stone” you would have as Tasks:

    – Integrate a Faction to your Family

    – Fend off predator attacks

    – Implement your Doctrine upon a Faction

    – Win a battle due to (re)discovered advances

    – Forge a Treaty with another Family

    – Honor your dead in systematic way

    If you finish 3 out 5 you unleash a specific Turn of Ages table and potentially grow from a few dozen people to a few hundred.

    This is the most vanilla example, but it’s easy to think of various tasks in a progression leading a certain outcome, be it a new Industrial Age or The Taming of the Kaiju 🙂
