Going to run actual 1st session tomorrow.

Going to run actual 1st session tomorrow. We did chargen and world building (Fictional version of Seattle, mashed up with Portland and Vancouver called Rain City!).

But actual first RP session is tomorrow. We have a ton of good back story and relationships, so the question is:

Should I ignore the start of session mechanic on that first session, in favor of hard-framing to get them all together?

I am looking for a “best bets” kind of feedback, it seems like the start of session is really meant for on-going session not that first one.

Thanks!

  1. The start of session moves is a good way to develop plot lines, which can be useful for the first game. It’s good to establish why the character might be interested in a certain event.

You can always hard move them together after the start of session move. You might find that you don’t even need a hard move when the players start calling each other’s debts to solve their problems.

  2. I wouldn’t avoid SoS moves.

No need to START all together.

If you work together strongly during chargen, you CAN actually have characters separated.

    1) CAN is not MUST

    2) work together strongly means create the strongest ties as possible between PCs.

    3) give and ask for many, many details; every detail is handhold for the MC to drag PCs together fictionally (as opposed to “because yes”)

  3. All good feedback. Thanks.

New question I started figuring out that first hard frame scene to get them together. Should I put that aside and wait to see what the SoS moves look like?

  4. Rich Glover In my opinion, always wait to see what the session brings. If you bring something premade into urban Shadows, you’ll either have to throw it away, or you’ll be potentially restricting their creativity. Safer just to go blank and then improvise.

Second and third session, that’s when you might start thinking about scenes and plots.

  5. I think I started to use hard framing on session 3 and following, to speed up things when my comrades started planning for nothing.

do you need a clear path? I’ll give you a clear, bright, burning path.

    they were glad.
