Wow, The Sprawl is really moving on up at DriveThruRPG at this time.
Under the category Hottest Small Press, the Noon edition has moved on to #2. The Midnight edition for some reason is only up to #11. Maybe it’s some quirk like people’s .pdf orders are counted more under one than under another, though “midnight” and printable white versions are both given out as .pdf’s.
In the overall listing I think I saw it go as high as #8, correct me if I’m wrong, but this is not unusual for ANYTHING new to surge in sales compared to older offerings.
This is great, it’s like a kind of Billboard top music album thing or Top of the Pops or whatever the sales rating system is in your country.
I’ve been keeping an eye on it as well, in case NOON gets to the top of Small Press.
The original PDF was at #1 overall for a while just after it released. That was pretty spectacular!
As it turns out, it is a quirk of the algorithm. The ratio of sales is 55%/45% in favour of MIDNIGHT, but NOON is a fair bit higher on the Hottest list. It might be balancing sales over time since release or something.
Jim Nicholson: do you notice a difference between reading on a screen and reading on paper for that?
Hamish Cameron Personally, I dislike white-on-black for both screen and print, but for different reasons in each case. For print, it’s mostly that typical examples I’ve seen use relatively glossy paper, so white text tends to get obscured by reflected light. With less reflective paper, I doubt it would be such a problem.
But for screen, I dislike it because it find it outright uncomfortable to read – it causes a lot of eye-strain, as I’ve commented on previously – though it’s mostly just the extreme contrast of white-on-black. I have no difficulty with the orange-on-dark text used in the example panels. And the green-on-black of the chapter fiction is still a little uncomfortable, but not as bad as the main text…
I’m extremely happy that PoD technology is good enough that I can make both versions and everyone can choose the option that best suits them!

That, and multiple PDF versions provides the same to the digital-only folks like myself. The printable PDF isn’t as pretty, but it’s much easier for me to read. Ain’t technology wonderful?
Of course, in the actual Sprawl, we’d presumably be reading through some kind of AR interface that causes the text of a virtual book to float in front of our eyes while sitting at the (also virtual) gaming table…
Simon Geard The fully-featured NOON PDF will be out soon, so then you’ll get your pretty black on white version 🙂
(Oh for an AR version!)
