It appears to get overall favorable reviews, from what I’ve seen.
It is that good! I slow burn towards madness and horror.
I enjoyed reading it and have played it. I am prepping to run to at the moment!
I’ll be the voice of dissention here. I thought tremulus was terrible, and is to date the only Kickstarter I have ever regretted backing.
Chris Stone-Bush why?
I have played and run tremulus several times.
Everyone I know really enjoyed this gaming experience.
Some people say Tremulus’ moves do not push the fiction forward. I have no opinion about it, yet
The moves do propel the fiction forwad, albeit slightly slower than other PbtA games. This is a game exploration after all.
Chris Stone-Bush can you elaborate on why? Asking before I waste money and time!
Chris Stone-Bush can you elaborate?
So tremulus is just written by somebody that didn’t quite have an understanding of what makes PbtA games tick, and this leads to a couple of problems with the game:
*The playbooks do not support strong archetypes in the way that PbtA playbooks typically do, and playbook moves are generally boring and forgettable, especially since there are so many playbooks.
*Several moves and subsystems are taken straight from AW without significant changes, which means the moves don’t do a very good job of articulating what makes the genre of Lovecraftian horror special.
*The game has no rules for advancement, and sanity is handled just like another damage system–which means the game doesn’t do anything to reflect the way characters change as they’re drawn deeper into the mystery.
OTOH, there are some high points: the system for setting up mysteries & threats is pretty good, and I think this was the one area where the author really did learn the deeper lessons of AW and apply to his own game.
Alan Scott pheeeew… it’s rare for me to disagree with a post in so many different levels! No disrespect there, mate. We are all entitled to our different opinions.
