  1. So tremulus is just written by somebody that didn’t quite have an understanding of what makes PbtA games tick, and this leads to a couple of problems with the game:

*The playbooks do not support strong archetypes in the way that PbtA playbooks typically do, and playbook moves are generally boring and forgettable, especially since there are so many playbooks.

*Several moves and subsystems are taken straight from AW without significant changes, which means the moves don’t do a very good job of articulating what makes the genre of Lovecraftian horror special.

*The game has no rules for advancement, and sanity is handled just like another damage system–which means the game doesn’t do anything to reflect the way characters change as they’re drawn deeper into the mystery.

OTOH, there are some high points: the system for setting up mysteries & threats is pretty good, and I think this was the one area where the author really did learn the deeper lessons of AW and apply to his own game.

  2. Alan Scott pheeeew… it’s rare for me to disagree with a post in so many different levels! No disrespect there, mate. We are all entitled to our different opinions.
