How do you handle the shifting of lables when playing with a small group since everyone has influence over everyone…

How do you handle the shifting of lables when playing with a small group since everyone has influence over everyone else. The lables often shift quick and sometimes without any kind of fiction especially if you go from celebrate right into end of session. Anyone had that problem?

  1. Can you say a little more, Christopher Sniezak? Do you mean the common case of “I already have Influence over you, and you’re giving me Influence again in the end of session move, so instead I shift your labels, but I just shifted them already in the last scene of the session”?

  2. Except when gaining influence a second time and end session moves : you have to shift others labels. Even with 4 players, on short sessions of 3h, results were not “convincing”. Too much shifting, not so much influence lost, session end moves tending to negate the shifting that happened before.

    One solution is to transform Influence from a yes/no status to numbered Influences, à la Monsterhearts, which you can use for various effect, or you can roll +influence to affect a PC. But it’s already a big hack

In our group, when a player has the ability to shift another player’s character’s Labels, there’s usually a short discussion between them to come up with an appropriate shift, based on the fiction. For end-of-session shifts, it’s usually evaluating how the events of the session as a while have affected the character.

    The key is to not think of it as an antagonistic move. You’re all working together to support the narrative and have fun.

    I’ve actually had an adult NPC attempt to shift my character’s Labels in a direction I was already planning to go to, so I rolled with it and used that in the fiction. One scene had a villain goad my character into rash action, and I think I actually surprised the GM by saying, “Hell yeah, here we go.” 🙂
