Got a question about Emporium.

Got a question about Emporium. I am unclear about the move’s questions – I get the intent, fiction-wise, but how are the +/- modifiers intended to work? Do the modifiers apply on “yes” answers only? If they apply regardless of the answer (which appears to be the way it is written), then it is a zero sum, and the roll is always unmodified.

  1. Yes, just on those answers. The MC and the players will build what this area looks like with those questions to arrive at the modifier for the location. Since the MC has input, it would be strange if the fiction contained none or all of these things, but possible!

  2. Fair enough, thanks! I am still wrapping my head around the PBTA aesthetic. Trying to overcome a lifetime of not-story games experience.

  3. No problem! A lot of PbtA answers are: whatever makes sense for the fiction. Which, yeah. Can be a rough thing to figure out coming from a more trad standpoint as it’s generally not (as) collaborative.
