An update on Malleus, my PbtA based game of 17th Century monster hunting:

I have finally got around to putting together updated versions of all of the Malleus archetype playbooks, on the new single page layout. This means the game is actually playable again, as the playbooks actually match the current state of the rules text.

I’m pretty happy with the new playbooks, although they haven’t been properly proofread. The references sheets are a bit rough and ready though, and the layout needs revision. I can finally get back to playtesting with these, however,

And the current draft of the rules (with updated logo!) is here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yGpNkbjkI1ycvHftMSYNwh1I-8JCyv4x9LvthPGsb8g/edit?usp=sharing

  1. So, to follow-up:

1.) I’ve not yet played a full session of the game [full disclosure]

2.) I went through character creation with one group of three people, two of whom had never played a TTRPG, and didn’t know PbtA [my friend knew these two people, and invited them]. We played for an hour+ after unpacking the game and making characters, and the session went fairly well given how short the session ended up being. Looking at making Hunts and Arcs was an intuitive process; you’ve segmented it in a way which really makes it clear what the form and function of this prep is. There were abundant opportunities for these new players to latch onto the setting, and they started to get into the characters quickly, being familiar with fantasy tropes and the time period. This was especially evident when we worked with the trust statements. The blend between what we had discussed, what the rules provided, and the setting which had been established resounded harmoniously with the short hunt I’d thrown together.

3.) Last night I was scheduled to play a one-off of Malleus with my regularly meeting DW group since one of our number would be absent, putting us with 3 experienced players. Unfortunately, our third was unable to make it. We did, however, have a wonderful discussion about the game. I feel as though I’ve got a good feeling about what makes this game distinct to those from whence it came. I’m hoping I’ll have time to feel how to complete a hunt and an arc; from there I’ll try to do a more organized write-up.

    Thanks again.
