I wonder if it’s possible to play Monsterhearts without (especially romantic monogamous) relationships (and of course “love triangles” which I prefer to call them “Jealousy Triangles” that only enable abusive relationships which I’m trying to avoid) but rather something similar to Lost Boys where you’re part of a gang of vampires?

  1. Have you tried not to play jelous/abusive characters? Triangles work great to create drama, and compelling plots, and they dont have to necessarily be about romantic interests.

  2. You’ll want to reinterpret “turn someone on” and find some other form or shared intimacy, not sex, to trigger sex moves.

But you may be better off looking into some of Emily Care Boss ‘s games. She has a great one specifically about playing a tribe or group of supernaturals — werewolves, Celestials, fae, vampires, whatever. The name escapes me right now, but it should be goggleable.

  3. Roberto Giugno While it’s easy not playing as a abuser but then again though this has more to do with NPCs though.

Also I entirely reject the “Love Triangle” concept because what I’ve said before they’re more like jealousy triangles which often has abuse connotations which I’m trying to avoid and there’s nothing compelling about them but only triggering for PSTD victims who have experienced abuse in their lives, that’s why it’s best to remove them entirely.

“Triangles work great to create drama, and compelling plots, and they dont have to necessarily be about romantic interests.”

How is that even possible? There’s a reason why it’s called a “Love Triangle” and there doesn’t have to do with romantic interests then what is it then?

I also entirely reject the concept of “shared intimacy” of any form just like I entirely reject the very concept of relationships as well especially monogamous.

Such things are only symptoms or rather normalizations within our patriarchal society.

Also get this, if I wanted sex then I would be pretty much “Free Love” and being promiscuous.

Basically, I only accept the simple concept friendship rather being part of a group/gang of likeminded individuals who have alot of things in common and of course helping/supporting each other out.

  5. Shared intimacy doesn’t need to be romantic or sexual. Imagine all your monsters go to a conservatory — the “sex move” could instead be a “performance move.”

“When you co-author and perform an original piece together for a live audience…”

Or it could be a moment of support in weakness —

“When one of you tends to the other’s wounds.”

It just needs to be a process that involves some amount of trust, attention, and vulnerability that involves more than one person.

  6. I still reject that too or rather I wonder if I entirely rejected shared intimacy altogether if it’s possible in Monsterhearts.

Get this, I never been in a romantic relationship in my entire life even when I was a teenager since I mostly avoided everyone (like sitting down beneath stairs, etc). I just hate it when stories around teens/young adults just assume that everyone of them are teen romances and such which I don’t think they’re telling everyone else’s stories.

  7. Why do you want to do this with Monsterhearts? It sounds like you want to remove some of the core pieces of Monsterhearts. What part of Monsterhearts do you like/want? It might be easier to pick a different game (where romance and abusive relationships are not a core principle of the game) and import the parts of Monsterhearts to that game.

  8. I guess the core principles of monsterhearts is deeply problematic in the end which enables abusive situations that can be triggering for people with PSTD who witnessed or survived abusive situations.

Can’t think of anything else to tell you the truth, I was only asking if removing or doing without certain aspects was possible which apparently it isn’t.

  9. Based on your post history, I suspect you’ll need to look outside of PbtA games for what you want.

Behind the genre trappings, PbtA games tend to be designed around a central theme the game is built to explore. Apocalypse World is about community in times of scarcity; Urban Shadows is about the complex politics of intersectionality; Masks is about the unfair expectations placed by society on the young.

If a PbtA game is not about a specific theme, it’s about telling a certain kind of story. Spirit Of ’77 is meant to tell the kinds of stories you’d find in 70’s exploitation films; Dungeon World is a PbtA-ized riff on Dungeons & Dragons; Action Movie World is about building cheeseball 80’s and early 90’s action movies with your friends.

If you’re not into the elevator pitch of a given PbtA game, chances are good you won’t be into the game itself. The games’ mechanics reinforce their themes and vice versa.

Urban Shadows is perhaps your best bet if you want a PbtA game. Or Monster of the Week, perhaps. Depends on what you want the roles of the PCs to be. But Monsterhearts seems to be orthogonal to what you want. It is at its core about relationships, both the good and the bad, and people who are exploring their feelings, urges, etc, and trying to deal with it, growing up, etc.

  11. Well Monster of the Week is about playing Hunters which I have no interest of.

Sounds like Urban Shadows is the closest game around but there’s the corruption rules however that makes you loose your character.

Since I’m soley looking for playing as a Vampire character in a urban seting with the simple premise of “You’ve been embraced and dragged into the supernatural underworld now you deal with undead politics as well managing and dealing with your own vampirism”.

  12. While there are indeed corruption rules that can see a character lost in Undying, it’s quite hard to get a character that far, by the looks of it.

And if you specifically want to avoid abusive behaviours, then your GMing style is likely to further discourage such things, so it’s even less likely.

And if you want to do without that extent of it, just ditch the Lost level. There are enough drawbacks to a low rank anyway.

White Wolf first released this game in 1991.
