The infiltrator in my game just bought himself a neural interface. I know that had he picked it up during chargen he would have the Jack In move. He had the foresight to grab the deck in Gen. So I’m curious if he gets the Jack In move automatically or does he need to spend xp and get it as an advancement?

I think it’s within the spirit of the rules and the fiction to just give it to them. I mean, the cyberdeck’s description implies access to the matrix moves anyway, and the main reason they’re taking the interface is to do matrix stuff, so I’d just let them do matrix stuff. Gating the matrix behind two advances if you’re not a hacker never made sense to me anyway.
If you want a RAW answer, there isn’t one. The universal version of the neural interface only provides the option to take Jack In as an advance, so that says you have to spend an advance. But the version on the Infiltrator sheet, which they arguably have access to, says they just get it. So do whichever feels right.
Thanks James Etheridge . I kind of assumed that was the case but the wording in the book threw me off.
The question has been raised here more than once before, and I’m pretty sure Hamish has offered clarification (but can’t remember his answer). I suggest searching, to see if you can find those previous discussions.
Thanks Simon Geard going through the history it seems that it was the intention to give taking neural interface at chargen a better option than in play. Given the fiction at my table it feels appropriate for the infiltrator to get the jack in move
It does sorta feel like Jack In shouldn’t be a move. It should just be ‘That thing you can do if you have ware/a deck’. As that’s 2 separate hefty requirements already.
