Can anyone link me to a YouTube live play session of Apocalypse World that is a good representation of what the game is really like to play?

I’ve read through The Sprawl, most of Tremulus and I’m currently 1/3rd of the way through Apocalypse World and still don’t quite get it.

Thanks

  1. It’s no problem! It’s not the simplest game from the outside, as a newcomer. I owned the game, tried to run it, failed, and hated it all until I got to play in the game of someone who really got it. Only then did I start to love it. A good teacher is very helpful.

  2. I struggled to get my traditional rpg head around the game and I don’t think until Monster of the Week and the Dungeon World fan guide from a reddit user did I really get it.

Also as much as I loved the writing in Apocalypse World I just wasn’t understanding how it all came together. I will say though, and I still go back to it because I friggin love it, that extended play example in the AW book with the brained that messes with some guys who then come back to her place with a chainsaw and grenade. That play example is superb and that too really helped me grok a more combat type encounter.

Not super sure of YouTube stuff but the Friends at the Table podcast does great Dungeon World, Blades in the Dark, and The Sprawl stuff. The most recent season is of The Veil.

Also if you want a more traditional Apocalypse World thing check out the Jank Cast podcast and their Leviathan series.. I think they have two seasons.

  3. Marty B., I presume that Twilight Mirage is the Veil game? Friends at the Table has the irritating feature of not saying jack shit about what system they’re using for the various game series.

  4. Pedro Pereira yeah correct Twilight Mirage is the Veil game.

Hm I never noticed that. I thought the Gm/Mc/whatever it happens to be called in that particular pbta game, Austin, usually calls that out when he goes over his agendas.

Like, we’re playing Dungeon World, a game by Adam Koebel and Sage laTorre

We’re playing the Sprawl by Hamish Cameron… and so on, and here are my agendas… blablahblah

I could very well be recalling that incorrectly though.

  5. You’re probably right that he says that in the podcast itself, but not in the blurb text associated with the episodes, which is what makes it slightly annoying when looking at the list of available episodes/seasons. Thank for the info 🙂

  6. Pedro Pereira oh yep you are totally correct with that. The blurbs are cool but like meta story focused. It would be nice if the game played was mentioned somewhere.
