  1. My name is Azcarian, but sometimes I use the mortal name of Wesley Sanders.

I am a magician of the once powerful Order of Hermes.

My master meet me when I was a teenager, and kidnapped me. I don’t remember anything from before. I know nothing about my family or the place I was born. I am unsure about my age. Maybe I am forty? It’s useful, because nobody knows my real name, or my date of birth, so I am protected, and this information can not be found anywhere. My master was the only person that knew it, and now is dead. I am not sad about it. He was a mean man, a cruel one. It wasn’t my intention to kill him, but I have no regrets. It was he or me.

I have lived in this city all the time I can remember.

Sometimes I can not sleep at night and all I can think about is the kind of life I could be living if I didn’t have the Gift. And I am happy of being who I am. Having a family is nothing compared to the power of bending reality itself. I have sacrificed my mortal life in order to become a Magus, a vessel of power, but sometimes I feel alone. I have been in this sanctum for years, talking with no one but my deranged master, and his friends.

  2. “I need a way out.”

The five words that damned Clarice Bridges, then a scrawny teen, bruised all over with a broken arm. Rahab had stood there, had washed away the pain and bruises, like they were nothing but wet paint, and he was a gentle tide. he had comforted her, given her food, and asked her how he could help.

It had been so easy, easy to accept, easy to ask for a little more help. some plane tickets here, some cash there, a safety net when she got a little too deep. But she owed, more and more every year.

That was 8 years ago, and it looked as though time had been kind to Claire, now in her own apartment, a closet full of nice clothing for every occasion. The latest model phone. Most people never look past that surface level, don’t notice the tired eyes, don’t pay mind to her disappearances, and don’t think about who’s letting her live in such comfort.
