  1. The Tyrant Kings are my easy number one, because I like the idea of taming the wasteland through direct, brutal methods and keeping their new society intact with force. The Uplifted Children of Mankind have also hugely grown on me.

  2. I’m a big fan of the Servants of the One True Faith and the Lawgivers – both are motivated by their passion and ideals, although the Servants are more about changing things where the Lawgivers are about preserving normalcy. I also love how the servant moves you take can completely change whether you’re murderous zealots or compassionate martyrs.

  3. Though I have yet to play or run the game yet, for my money it’s probably the Enclave of Bygone Lore. I love the idea of discovering and using knowledge and technology (especially pre-Fall) and also adding new truths about the world.

A runner up for me is probably the Pioneers of the Depths, since they have such a unique focus and I imagine that any game that includes them will have a very different-looking and -focused world, considering their dominance over the sea and other bodies of water.

  4. I love my Uplifted Children, as you can design whole races and play with creatures that never were with them. But, most importantly IMO, is their Hero’s Journey… they come from nothing, owe everyone, and usually steal the limelight by becoming quite heroic… or quite brutal.

A less biased option would be the Enclave. They are SO versatile! And usually the best at what they do. I’ve played with a militaristic version of the Enclave and the Tyrants at the table were made to look rather meek in comparison rss

  5. Lex Permann The Tyrants got a reputation as “difficult” among my players that i simply cant change! What do you like the most about them?

The Uplifted became their number one choice for a more aggressive style of play.

  6. Douglas Santana Oh, how can they not love the Tyrants! You get to go out and restore order to this poor wild Homeland by crushing it beneath your heel? To play the Tyrants is to choose to kinda be the bad guy, and to have all the fun that entails.

  7. Douglas Santana The Starfarers rub me the wrong way for some reason. I’m okay with some wilder stuff in my apocalypse – psychic maelstroms, crazy mutants, big robots, giant monsters – but for some reason alien invaders, even presented in a serious way, is waaaay too goofy for my tastes.

Odds are when I run Legacy, they’ll be banned from my time unless a playing gives me a truly stunning oration about why they’re great.

  8. Lex Permann fair enough! The intent was to allow for a War of the Worlds/Falling Skies post-apocalypse, but I can see them making things goofy. Part of the reason we put modes of play into the book was to help groups make the decision about how weird they want their apocalypse to be.

Interested in your thoughts on the Order of the Titan, too!

  9. My current playtest group has a Starfarer. Things became more scifi-ish, for sure…. but also much darker (and obvioulsy much weirder). Mostly because he described the homeland as hostile to alien and humans alike.

  10. By the way, not sure if this was intentional or not, but I realized that the family options for Legacy include the archetypes from the Mutant: Year Zero series (Mutants, Uplifted/Mutant Animals, and Robots). 😉

  11. Douglas Santana In your playtest group, what Character did the Starfarer jump to? That’s one of my stumbling blocks.

And my feelings on the Order of the Titan swings based on how intentionally disruptive they are; they grab the spotlight and bring a major setting element into play. If you have a good player behind them who has evocative ideas for what the giant monsters are, they’re awesome, but I definitely wouldn’t want them in every game or with a player I didn’t trust.

Now, has any of that stopped me from daydreaming about a wannabe chivalric order of dragonslayers camped out in a castle that was old before the Fall? Not even a little bit.

  12. Lex Permann a Starfarer Sentinel encased in a huge heavy armor / life support – somewhere between the Protos and Stargate villains. It seems like a Seeker is his next choice.
