It’s the first session, and I thought it would be cool if my Driver went to visit their contact (a wise drone-guru) for spiritual guidance, specifically regarding the nature of self and community when the mind is distributed over multiple devices.

How would you rule or run that?

  1. A really cool roleplay scene that might qualify for getting an XP for meeting their drive.

Realistically the structure of Sprawl is all about restricted time and restricted resources..so what are they missing out of during the mission planning that might cause a problem for the part that is instead for their own self advancement.

Sprawl has one great restriction..in that its all about the mission, and not about what the characters do between missions…and whether that is a problem or not..depends on your roleplay style, and how you connect to your experience in a game.

  2. I’ll echo Riley Crowder here a bit. The Sprawl is all about the mission. The rules don’t cover what happens between missions. So unless the meeting between your Driver and their mentor is part of a mission, it’s just a roleplay moment.

  3. To me, that’s a player telling me where they want the campaign to go. I take that kind of info very seriously.

I’d roleplay out some of the shoot the breeze session and maybe have you make a Hit the Street roll to get [intel] that you could use later, like a martial arts film flashback. My hope is that you’d 7-9 or bomb the roll so I could make moves that put the philosophy of distributed intelligence in the spotlight. And then I’d look at my prep and make sure to locate those sorts of issues within my Threats and Corporations. Does XCorp have a distributed AI, and what is it up to? Does IT have THEM? Is there a Headspace style merc team harassing people in the slums where the team lives? Has a military satellite network become self-aware and stopped responding? Is your PC actually an android controlled by an AI consciousness unaware of its true nature, distributed across the processors of their devices, drones, and vehicles? How would I slowly reveal these things?
