So as this game moves towards completion, I am thinking the first time I run the game I might want to shape it a little differently.

I’m thinking a world based in Chinese history and Mythology. Maybe something with Wuxia influences. Perhaps work in some Zodiac and I-Ching flavoring for playbooks like the Raven and Spider.

What do people think?

  1. After running it several times now, I’m convinced there’s a huge opportunity for reskins and playsets. I want to document the different Shadow nations I’ve run to offer them as kind of pre-gens for one shots with the Shadow nation given a name, some different kinds of units, and a distinctive culture of oppression and toxicity.

I was actually thinking of a sci fi version where the PCs are fighter pilots or space marines. 🙂

  2. Totally agreed. I think you could do hacks off of specific countries or histories if you want some sort of relatively cohesive culture. My only concern is if that’ll tie you in with specific look and feel of a people (e.g. historical Asia or Africa or Europe or whatever) may make you feel like your hands are tied as far as your look, even if you take into account how diverse these places really were. (Obviously you can say “historical East Asian influence” and not give one shit about how people look, as one solution.)

Personally, I lean towards something of a “far future after humans have colonized a planet” or some post-apoc setting, as that can easily explain the total mish-mash of physical traits not needing to match for “a people” (given: we’re in fantasy land so you can come up with anything to explain that, or not care in the slightest). Reminds me of a cast in a show like The 100.

That said, I love that answering any of the clan questions can give that clan those influences you desire as well. A one-shot con game gives you very little time on fleshing out the clans, but I’m guessing in a home campaign you could answer those questions with quite a bit more depth (like in session zero).

  3. Drew had Western and Sci-fi versions he was playing around with for a while, and my husband has his own post-apoc/sci-fi flavor he’s been talking about for a while. Like Bryanna Hitchcock says, I think it’d be really easy to reskin. I just don’t want to do any of the work! 😀

  4. I was thinking about this, this morning. This would do an amazing job of running a Mas Effect game. The relationships and everything else tied to those make it excellent.
