  1. Murderous Ghosts is specifically written for one player – an urban explorer in a bad situation – and one GM – the ghost haunting them and likely trying to murder them. It’s very nicely set up to build that tension, but it’s very particular to that situation. A new edition was recently released to broaden it out a bit, but even there the players are deciding what action the explorer takes rather than each having a role.

I wonder – how well does Bluebeard’s Bride work with one player and one GM? And if you tried that, would you have the player switch between different sister playbooks?

  2. I GM a one on one Dungeon World game and that works just fine. https://youtu.be/1CszbglYT8g. Some of them won’t work as written, like Apocalypse World and Monsterhearts because the players are expected to roll their own trouble; things with more focus on external gm threats like Monster of the Week and DW work.

  3. Basically what James said. Added to it that the game was Baker made essentially means that if you want to consider 2 player friendly pbta games, the 2 player game made by the people who started it all really needs to be on your list.

  4. We have had great success with 2player AW, MH, SOTI, Urban Shadows and Masks. It takes some procedural hacking (PC-built NPCs) or troupe play to work well in any strings/hold/debt/bond based system though.

  5. I’d also recommend checking out the Party of One podcast. It’s all APs of one player one gm (or just gmless) games. (Some designed that way, others just being played that way.)
