Space Combat.

Playing a sci-fi games makes me really want to try a space battle in Uncharted Worlds. I’ve seen characters boarding moving vehicles and doing other crazy stunts, but we always avoided space battle.

Have you seen space battle in any AP or podcast or blog?

Have you played it yourself and can share with us, what was the setup, what actions players took to overcome particular challenges, what was the table feedback and feeling regarding space battles?

I’ve read the section about running Villains from FBH, but I still cannot picture in my mind how such battle can play out.

  1. Pawel Solowczuk, we had an escape in our play by post that involved quick maneuvering to get close enough to damage a pursuer with point defence weapons. Here’s the link: tavern-keeper.com – TavernKeeper

You might want to search ahead for the word “hrothgar” to see the start and evolution of the action. (Also you might need to click the “see more posts” button at the top to get all of the entries.

  2. Mostly it’s about manning stations, disabling enemy weapons and/or breaching their hull while trying to destroy, board or escape. They’ve rarely manned all stations on their ship, as they’ve got 1+ fighters (varies) and prioritise PDS (point defense stations) when manning weapons.

They have to shoot down missiles, avoid gunfire, stay out of effective energy range. – They respond to variations in enemy armament, but it’s mostly like this.

We’ve had several space combat events in our campaign.

The players have had at least one fighter on board since the start and standard number of hard points on their ships. They’re on their third ship now.

We don’t use shields, but their engines are Alcubierre drives, which compress space in front of the ship to pull it along, and in effect creates a near-impenetrable keel in front of the ship. (not unlike the Honorverse ships)

They’ve fought a mercenary frigate manned by pig hybrids in one battle, which ended with the fish-in-a-gladiator-mech leaping across from their hull to the destroyer’s and placing a huge plastic explosive bomb (prepared during the exchange) close to the enemy ship’s helm and then leaping back as the destroyer blew up. It fell silent and dropped into Uranus’ atmosphere. I think they had to reinstall some workspaces after that battle.

They fought a trio of destroyers (class 2, equipped to take out fighters) which were taken out by virtue of a stealth fighter and focused firepower. Their own ship took damage to its crew compartment, leaving a big hole, and they barely managed to stay aloft (they were in the gravity well of a junkyard planet) but repaired their engines in time to dampen their descent.

There were more, but I think you get the idea?

  3. Yes, hacking, of course! Good point! Recently they hacked into their own ship after it was stolen, but only managed to access the coffee machine and a vacuum cleaner drone. This did eventually get them intel on the space pirates
