Carta Galaxia Development Update #13
Small update today. Tooling around with different layouts and designs for the Districts section. Basically an area of the world and its sub-locations, playgrounds and points of interest the characters can visit.
A lot of location-based suppliments can be rather dry. I’m hoping to give a sandbox feel, inviting further exploration.
On that note: If anyone knows of really stellar sandbox-y settings that are city/district-scale, I’d appreciate a heads up.
While I don’t quite have a layout/formula I like yet, I thought I’d share a small mindmap for one of the districts.
There are a couple of subway map makers out there that might offer an alternate view style of the locations relationships. Something to play with.
Blades in the Dark is the current hot tamale when it comes to City-sized sandbox play. However, for this kind of thing, I would lean more towards Technoir’s city guides. They’re filled with small, nugget-sized Nodes of info about people, groups, dangers, objects,
locations, and important NPCs — who have all the nodes associated with them listed alongside them. Perhaps not the best match for what you want, but they’re good City guides regardless.
I confess a deep affection for a setting called New Hope City which is part of a friend’s line of sci fi miniature gaming rules (the “5150” series from Two Hour Wargames). It begs to be given the UW treatment.
I don’t know if it’s sandbox-y so much as it emphasizes what is specifically important/interesting/relevant to your characters, but I’ve always liked the city/setting building minigame in the full-blown Dresden Files Fate RPG.
