The start of the mission. Some moves trigger on meta game states. This is one.
To quote the book:
“*It all fits together!* You’re a master of making connections between seemingly unrelated events. At the start of a mission, roll Edge.”
The trigger is “at the start of the mission”.
Of course, with a move like this, the trigger is something of a formality, since there’s no real narrative event behind it… it just means that you start each mission with up to 3 hold, which can’t be replenished by triggering the move again mid-mission. I think of it as representing inspiration… the number of “eureka!” moments that might occur during the course of a mission.
Simon Geard hmm that’s what I thought. I prefer moves that are triggered by PC action. Meta moves are kinda weird, I’m not keen on them in other PbtA games. I’m running for people who haven’t played PbtA, its easier to teach if things are consistent.
How do other people approach this? How can PCs use it. Maybe I’ll suggest to the Hunter that they trigger the move when they listen to the mission brief.
I usually remind players to roll those right after the get the job scene is complete, so that makes perfect sense, Richard Smithson.
Richard Smithson think of it as special hunter intel they can spend to do cool cop investigative stuff. It’s really no different mechanically from a prepared spell or once a day ability in other games.
The playbook specific holds can really lend some narrative power to those playbooks and make players feel like badass versions of those archtypes.
Matthew Terry yeah that’s not my issue, it’s the trigger more than anything. But I think the trigger is accepting the job and taking time to think about the case and things they already know.
This is a great point, Richard Smithson. I’m making a note on this in my 2e file.
Richard Smithson I would look at it differently. The actual roll for the move is just a mechanical thing that needs to be done and get out of their way.
When the hunter SPENDS that hold, that is when there should be a cool trigger in my opinion.
Matthew Terry like flicking through their notes or their big AR Minority Report board of clues? That’s cool too. If I was playing a Hunter I’d keep my notes in a virtual space that looked like a noir detectives office, but locked away in my brain.
Hamish Cameron there’s a 2e file?? Yessssssssss.
Richard Smithson sure! However the fiction of your sprawl dictates it. Last Sprawl I ran was almost cassette punk with large cables and lots of jacks so it wouldnt fit there. In more modern ideas of cyberpunk that would be really sweet.
It’s a very short file at the moment. I have at least three more RPGs to publish first.
I think the narrative trigger is being the hunter. Streetwise is her specialty. She’s always keeping an ear to the ground—especially off camera.
Using this move is the hunter’s spotlight moment. It’s the same as when the hacker rolls their move. Anyone else with a deck can hack but only hacker gets that hold to spend to show off their skillz.
When the hunter spends hold that’s just revealing that she already heard rumors on the street. Now it’s relevant.
