So I am 4 sessions into running my first Apocalypse World game. And I am loving it. I have introduced custom move that I created for a player whose character is 1 of a set of triplets who said that they are no longer together because trouble always showed up when they were together. It has worked well so far but I am thinking of ways it might change going forward. Here’s the move (it worked well but any advice or other possible effects would be welcome) :
Dammit Storm: The storms come when the Dammit sisters are together. Roll + number of sisters. on a 10+ hold 1 , on a 7-9 hold 2 on 6- hold 3 :
– You have time to prepare
– The storm is localized.
– The storm passes quickly.
– No one suffers Psychic harm
This is a neat move. What’s the trigger, though? Is it just whenever time passes or when they come together?
Mark Diaz Truman when they come together if its 2 sisters +2 if its all 3 +3. Fictionally the sisters went their separate ways in the hopes that they wouldn’t cross paths again. Of course, after talking to my player, I just took that as an invitation to make a move when she travels away from the hold.
I think making the trigger explicit would be awesome:
When Dammit sisters come together, roll + number of sisters. No matter what you roll, the storm comes. On a 10+, hold 1; on a 7-9, hold 2; on a 6-, hold 3:
– You have time to prepare
– The storm is localized.
– The storm passes quickly.
– No one suffers Psychic-harm
That’s really cool! Only other suggestion I’d make is maybe bring a bit more explicit about what “the storm” is. Might not be necessary though
Yeah in game the storm is a dust storm the randomly changes materials in its path. ie fields of grass turn to glass, dead flesh turns to wood, water turns to gasoline. Sorta inspired by 30’s dust storms and insect swarms bringing change amping up scarcity. Out of game its random clouds of nanobot somehow interacting with the maelstrom.
Also thanksMark Diaz Truman thats a good edit.
I love the imagery, man. Such great stuff in that move. I might even give someone the opportunity to advance the move in some neat way as the story goes on. 😀
