The Spooky in my group chose the tags, “Depression, Guilt, and Secrets” for her dark side. I’m having trouble thinking of ways to implement these in a meaningful way that could affect her use of powers without creating a new mechanic that may be unbalanced.

So far, I’ve toyed with the idea that she may use her powers to investigate, but she has to keep what she’s learned secret from the other hunters and if they find out she’s keeping those secrets, the guilt causes her powers to stop for the session.

  1. What moves has she chosen? Using telepathy gives you fodder for Secrets (Nothing will hide from you, no matter how personal or private). Depression at the grim sights of premonition makes her cruel or apathetic or just plain listless. Guilt makes her self destructive or overwhelmed by the psychic miasma of others internal pain.

  2. I’d address this with:

    – Use Act Under Pressure to use powers when depression or guilt are a factor.

    – When using powers, remind her of the guilt and secrets she has been hiding.

In particular, I would steer clear of “you can’t use your powers” because that means she can’t do so much.

Read the tags as a request for wallowing in guilt and depression and having dark secrets being part of the use of her powers.

  3. You can also ask questions when she uses the powers:

    – What horrible thing did you use this power for previously, that you now recall?

    – What secret of your past is hinted at right now?

    – How can you live with yourself after doing that?

  4. I would also recommend against cessation of her powers. The Dark Side is the unsavory source of her powers, and whatever it is it wants her to use them. As a fan of your player, you should too.

With Depression and Guilt, you can give her the inner voice of her demons occasionally reminding her that “there is no point” “this is all your fault, you know” “You can’t really do enough to save everyone” “your friends are going to die, matter of face you’re going to get them killed.”

With Secrets, I’d ask her whether she’s obsessive about keeping them or rubbish at understanding other people’s weird concept of “privacy.” Does she feel compelled to keep meaningless things secret for no good reason, or does she fight her depression and feed her guilt by constantly digging into other people’s private business?
