Hello PbtA folks! Veteran RPGer but new to your game system; I have played Monster of the Week, Blades in the Dark and Dungeon World at con games and loved the freeform/no prep style of this system.
My gaming group is now tasking me with running a Guardians of the Galaxy game, any suggestions for a PbtA hack and playbooks?
I would go with Uncharted Worlds first, and tweak the color as needed.
Maybe take a look at Scum & Villainy (the Blades in the Dark hack)
A friend of mine is using Masks for a GotG game, and I think it’s a grand idea!
You can tweak each Playbook’s powers easily to fit in the space adventure mold, and the themes of each character type are great in that kind of story.
You should also check out Impulse Drive, it’s a Pay-What-You-Want game in playtest (on Drive Thru RPG) and emulates media like Mass Effect, Firefly, and Farscape.
Another vote for Masks. I played in a GotG game using Masks recently and it worked great.
I feel I’d play it with Masks. Or maybe even DW, with minor tweaking.
What sort of action do you see in a GotG game? Is it focused on the crew relationships (maybe Monsterhearts?) or is it focused on space travel and exploration (Uncharted Worlds) or is it about shooting and smashing (perhaps Adventures on Dungeon Planet).
I’ve used Johnstone Metzger’s Adventures on Dungeon Planet to run some great pulp sci-fi games in the past. If your players are going to play the actual characters from GotG you would probably need to hack the playbooks.
Also try Worlds in Peril. I believe someone out there statted the Guardians for it.
Impulse Drive or Uncharted Worlds are SF based AW games you could try to work with
Here it is, Henry de Veuve
Guardians of the Galaxy pregenerated characters for Kyle Simons’s Worlds in Peril:
plus.google.com – So I’ve seen some requests for new character builds so I put together the Gua…
Seibei Ha! I knew I’d seen it out there.
It depends if you consider GotG as a space spera or a super hero movie. Sure, it’s both, but you’ll have to choose 🙂
Masks. Worlds in Peril (though I find it a bit over-designed). If you want to get really out there. Do City of Mist and replace the City with The Galaxy.
Pierre M Both? Both. Both is good.
Henry de Veuve But is there a game designed specifically for Space Opera Super Heroes? I don’t know :/
If thievery/heists are important, perhaps Scum and Villainy, the sci-fi setting for Blades in the Dark?
