I signed up to be Keeper for MotW at a Local Gaming Convention, running both mysteries from the rule book. I am thinking of reducing the player’s Luck so they feel the danger of using it. Also, having the players go ahead and select from any of the playbooks from the rule book as character creation is pretty easy. Has Anyone else done this? By how much should Luck be reduced? Any other tips/tricks/hints for running MotW at a Con?

  1. I’ve run MotW twice at conventions. I’ve reduced luck to three boxes each. I also recommend crossing off a few of the moves that aren’t likely to see use in a one shot.

  2. I’d also recommend not offering all of the playbooks. Maybe split them into two groups keep the list focused and you’ll have a more cohesive hunter crew. Good luck with the game!

  3. I do 3 luck for con one-shots. I generally offer twice as many playbooks as there are players. I capriciously curate the selection — I don’t think I’ve ever offered the Divine but have always included the Expert, the Mundane, and the Spooky.

  4. Def reduce the luck. 3 sounds good. Last one shot I ran I didn’t include the Chosen or the Wronged, to me those playbooks seemed more geared toward longer arcs. I kinda wish I’d disallowed the Divine as well, but it all worked out.
