So I’m finally ready to start another game, and a friend wants to play apocalypse world,as does my wife. The problem is they might be my only 2 players. So my question is can AW be played as a two player Badlands duo team of awesome? I’ve not tried a 2 player AW game, but I’m have tempted to rub with it and enjoy it. Just looking for some advice, tips, and experiences.

Absolutely, AW is not a dungeon crawler. So you don’t need the party template like you would in other games. Since it is a conversation, the amount of hurt is proportional to how deep you step into it or how big your mouth is. If you have a gang, expect gang sized problems. If you have a duo of ass kickers, it’s more personal and social.
Yes, that can be done. Just be advised that it can also be played as a vicious contest between two bitter enemies. Both can happen in the same campaign, be advised. Better yet, be prepared by asking them what sort of dynamic they want with the other PC. For maximum fun (assuming you’ll post AARs) ask the separately and in writing.
“Two-players Badlands duo team of awesome” could have been a tag on the cover.
Yes, you’ll be fine. In character creation, set as a baseline that the two of them have each other’s backs in this hard and bizarre world, and go for it.
The first AW games I played in were two players + MC, and they were some of the best sessions I’ve ever been in.
In addition to what’s been said before, it might be helpful for one player to pick a playbook that includes a gang/followers to introduce a bunch of extra NPCs into the mix, but it’s not necessary.
All posts before are valuable already, so I I only want to add: I was MC for 3 players and it worked very well. I can imagine playing with 2 players too. I assume you only have to prep/improvise more NPCs to interact with the players, in case they run out of topics to talk about. Such a story stopper is a no-go for any group size, just be prepared it’s a bit more likely.
