Does anyone have any suggestions for getting across the lore of the universe to the players?

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting across the lore of the universe to the players? Some things will emerge naturally from play, but I want to help create the feeling of a history to the monsters they hunt with in-universe texts.

  1. Personally, I throw the basic framework down during “Session Zero” or at least any time prior to people picking playbooks.

This can either be created whole cloth by the Keeper, by the whole table, or “organically through play”.

I find it useful because this gets everyone into the same kinda headspace, and lets everyone know what playbooks/skills/etc would be useful, basic expectations, and all that other stuff.

The main things I try to hammer down are pretty well much the following, posed as questions. If people are at a loss, pop culture references can usually work better than paragraphs of jabber (eg “this world is basically like that Bright movie”)

    1. Does magic exist, and if it does, what are its strengths, weaknesses, and limitations? (Helps figure out a LOT in advance, honest)

    2. How much does the ‘real world’ know about the kinds and types of monsters we will be investigating? (Are we talking X-Files? Bright? Cryptid hunting?)

    3. Where do our investigations usually take place? (Do they travel? Same big city? A single state? A specific country?)

    4. How do we find out about these investigations? (Is it our government job? Assignments from a boss at our company? Bad luck on road trips? Secret society? Friends working together?)

That’s the rough draft at least… This is usually enough world building that the players are supercharged with ideas (and champing at the bit to pick a playbook) and I, as the keeper, am rarely stuck trying to figure out how the plot should advance forward.

    Hope that helps.
