I’m not quite clear on how weapon harm works in AW: Fallen Empires. Is a weapon only deadly in the area specified (eg. in quarters, on the field), or in the area specified and larger? If it’s the latter, doesn’t that make a dagger a mechanically much better weapon than a bastard sword? cc Vincent Baker Meguey Baker

Only in the same. That means that dagger is more deadly in close quarters then sword, and if someone with dagger gets inside the range of swordsman.
Deadly means +1 damage in that range if I’m remembering correctly; so if your character is positioned correctly there’s an advantage to having a dagger up close
Right! A weapon does 3 damage only where (or when) it’s deadly, 2 damage otherwise.
So a dagger is deadly at quarters, but unless something comes up in the fictional positioning, it’s hard to get that close to someone swinging a bastard sword about. Gotcha.
Be super reserved when it comes to letting any fictional details supersede your environment, though. Pretty much nothing should.
By the rules, when you’re in a wide open space, a bastard sword inflicts 3 harm and a dagger inflicts 2 harm, no matter what else is going on. When you’re in a narrow hallway, a dagger inflicts 3 harm and a sword only inflicts 2.
Things like getting inside someone’s guard with your dagger or using your bastard sword to stand them off in a hallway are covered by the results of the moves, like inflicting terrible harm or suffering little harm.
