I know a number of people are working on space opera type hacks.
Me too. I think mine has a little different focus though. Ad Astra per Aspera is intended to do ship-based space opera with a focus on the political. So while (once it’s done) it can do explore-the-planet and fight-the-space-battle, it’s also interested in who’s in charge of the ship and how the ship’s actions affect what the political powers do.
Theoretically, anyway. What I’ve got so far is some incomplete noodling, but I will probably try to get some kind of not-really-ready playtesting going sometime soon.
But I thought I’d post version 0 for any thoughts or comments. And if somebody else really is already doing this same kind of thing, let me know.

This has promise. The ship statins should provide moves or gear to specific roles.

Rich Glover the one I’m working on does exactly that.
Social Justice Commander Shepard any doc available yet?
I’m still in the incomplete noodling stage myself, but why not. I’ll try and throw together what I have tonight after work.

Ok, so my Sci-fi Hack is called The Black.
I’ve taken some design cues from good old Apocalypse World, but I probably borrow more from Dungeon World for the minute by minute ‘in play at the table’ stuff.
This game is very much Version 0, some moves are just basic ideas or placeholders, and others are, I think, pretty much done. but there are still some big holes all through this and some mechanics that haven’t been thought through as far as they need to be.
Another bit of context you should know, is that unlike most pbta games, there will be a bare minimum of a ‘base setting’. I’m shooting for something more like Inverse World or Planarch Codex in terms of setting fluff, so it won’t be exhaustive, but there will definitely be more ‘something’ there than standard AW or DW.
The only things to keep in mind when reading what I have now is that the base setting is a mix between Firefly and Mass Effect in terms of technology, aliens cultures, etc.
In “The Black”, people wear armor, guns fire bullets, there are no such things as ‘energy shields’, ‘space-magic or psychic powers’, ‘no advanced AI’. energy weapons do exist, but are uncommon and prone to breakage.
(Although I’ve already made some notes for a wide range of alternate rules so people can do anything from Star Trek to BSG to Star Wars using my rules.)

One link is the general rules, the other is specifically about ship rules.
Here’s a more playtestable doc:
