Basic moves question, not related to the 2.0 update:
Vampire Vlad’s door is kicked in by an NPC monster hunter and the MC tells Vlad’s player the hunter is about to fire his shotgun at Vlad.
Vlad dives to cover to avoid being hit.
Which move does he use? Escape or Keep Your Cool?
Well, the beauty of *World games is that these scenarios don’t always have one answer. Where I might rule one move, another MC might interpret it differently. In this case though, Escape doesn’t feel right unless Vlad is actually leaving the scene. If his intention is to just buy himself a few moments to act, he may be forced to Keep His Cool.
That depends upon the layout of Vlad’s haven. Is there a backdoor? Is Vlad able to describe how he would escape in a way that makes sense? If not, then Vlad is going to have to keep his cool and hope that he can get his hands on the hunter. If Vlad’s player says, “I run past that hunter.” Then he’s going to make 2 moves. First move is Keep Your Cool to dodge the blast. Then I, as MC, would play out that roll and shell out damage as determined by my available moves. After that, I’d ask Vlad’s player what he does.
Sean proves my point perfectly. Different strokes…
Thanks guys! ^^
(I wasn’t sure if Escape was meant to be used to “escape” a certain dangerous aspect of a scene without actually leaving the scene.)
It sometimes can be used otherwise. My Vamp used it to escape a horde of undead and left her allies to die. Circumstances changed and I was eventually able to re-enter the scene. It all has to make sense, right? That’s the key.
