A couple of questions about Let It Out 2.0:

What constitutes “letting out the power within” for you? Does any use of supernatural abilities not covered by Archetype moves suffice (e.g. a Vampire using his supernatural senses to adjust his eyes to seeing by moonlight)? Does it take a display of more power than is required to fuel archetype moves? Somethig in between?

How do Mortals let out the power within them?

  1. In general, it can be pretty broadly narrated. Its essentially drawing on the fundamental nature of the archetype (a little like Nature in Mouse Guard).

I think for Mortals it would be digger deep to the darker side of what gives them their edge. For a Veteran, it could memories of all those atrocities they have witnessed yet did not address. For a Hunter, it could be bloodlust like that of the monsters they hunt. For a Scholar, it could be that esoteric lore that they promised themselves they would never use. For an Aware, it could be all the frustration they have in not being gifted like those around them.

  2. Luke Walker:

    Mortals: Makes sense, thanks! ^^

Broad description: That’s fine at the start of a campaign, but once the characters have a few Corruption advances, players will want to know exactly which kind of actions they need to avoid in the fiction unless they are willing to risk more Corruption. Am I looking at this from the wrong angle?

  3. I think the players are the one’s to decide when Let It Out is triggered, as the trigger is something internal to the PC. So, I am not sure it needs to be more defined to allow the players to avoid it. The Move grants a boost of power at the cost of Corruption. As GM, all you should be doing is bringing the pain and making the players want to give their PC that boost regardless of cost 🙂

  4. Luke has the right of it. When someone taps into their inner strength/reserves/power/darkness/etc.

Something to keep in mind as well, when players narrate their actions and you adjudicate which Basic Moves/Faction Move/Archetype Move they are making, they are always allowed to revise their narration to not do that move or do a different one. Your job as MC is not to police their actions but to clarify them and some to an agreement on which move, if any, is appropriate.

That isn’t explained in the sample documents but is a classic Apocalypse World philosophy that we have adapted for U-S as well.

  5. Okay, that sounds manageable. It will still require some discussion what letting out power means for each character individually, but I think I am fine with that. Thanks guys! ^^
