In my ongoing effort to learn more about lucha libre, I’m going to be watching the AAA Triplemania 32 show this evening! I don’t know if it’s mindful for this particular event or not but the card does seem to be built to appeal to people like me, who know the ex-WWE guys already.
I’m excited for that trios match, that looks dope!
Anyone else watching? Anything I oughta know going in? I’ve never watched a full AAA PPV before
Intrigued but might not be home in time.
Unfortunately the broadcast was plagued by audio issues that made the first 2/3 of the show pretty difficult to engage with. Also, I don’t know if the ring is usually mic’d for lucha but not being able to hear bumps (or the crowd for most of it) is a real downer.
I found a lot of the action in the atomico and trios matches to be hard to follow. I understand the technical rules, but it felt like this particular (show? promotion?) does the thing that drives me crazy at indie shows where “anything goes” in undercard matches and theres no reason for anyone not to be in the ring, so it’s just a jumble of bodies moving around without discernable purpose. Again, maybe it’s a style thing, or maybe those matches were not good. I don’t know!
Also there was a lot of tribute and send-off stuff. I guess AAA doesn’t really ever fire anyone so you end up with some old, old guys in the ring. However, I did enjoy seeing new faces!
All that said, the co-main event matches – Alberto El Patron vs Brian Cage in a hair-vs-hair lucha de apuesta, and Rey Mysterio vs. Myzteziz- were both really good! I started being able to hear the crowd which added a lot, and seeing Rey really go for the first time in years was awesome.
I love love love the attention to detail of costuming across the board, btw. Just watching dudes come out was pretty great, even if the matches were lackluster.
I would give one of these another shot, but with significantly tamped expectations next time, I think.
Yeah, that was what I gathered from twitter during the show.
Well, the good news was, it probably didn’t involve this Wasted-tier La Magistral Cradle.

Yes, that performer was unfortunately both too drunk to try a cradle and too drunk to realize he was attempting a cradle between falls.
How would you rate Triplemania against Ultima Lucha?
I haven’t seen Ultima Lucha yet! Probably, based on twitter chatter, not as good overall?
Justin Phillips I agree completely. Ultima Lucha was completely badass.
