The front credits page of Urban Shadows mentions Dana Fried’s “Three Small Apocalypse World Hacks”, but the link seems to be broken/dead, and I can’t find a cached version.

Does anyone have a copy of the hacks they could share? I’m curious. ^_^;

  1. No luck here either, not Google nor the Wayback Machine.. First two paragraphs:

    “Hacking the Apocalypse World system is all the rage these days.  Game designers are using the core framework to create brand new games across multiple genres – from horror to romance to historical fiction.

    Many of these hacks are complete re-imaginings that take the game away from its post-apocalyptic roots.  But there’s also a lot of room in the AW system for small hacks – things that keep the gritty, desperate feel of the game while changing the focus or tone just enough to make the setting feel different.  Here are three that I’ve come up with that can be used individually or together.”

  2. Short answer: Urban Shadows trigger for specials was one. Second was size categories of mecha and kaiju counting as increasingly large gangs. Third was a future noir/cyberpunk hack that was a little more in depth but didn’t change the mechanics significantly.

  3. Michael Phillips I think the sex moves are definitely one of the main turnoffs of the game to folks when they first hear about it. A fellow GM once tried to talk me out of running AW citing the sex moves as the reason.

    I explained that those are only one small part of the system and don’t even need to be used if people aren’t comfortable with them, but he wasn’t convinced. 9_9

  4. Some digging reveals these hacks were called AW Lite, AW Steel, AW Noir. cf. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1whsN3C5e31CZfo8hqlJbiKTPBX9kkCDSEG_An9FlP5s/edit#gid=0

    Here’s as close as I was able to get with the Wayback Machine:

    https://web.archive.org/web/20130925052422/http://leftoblique.net/wp/

    If you scroll down you can see the blog posting from August 12, 2013, ‘Three Small AW Hacks’. Sadly, Wayback does not have that actual post archived.

    Also a reference on reddit,

    http://www.reddit.com/r/rpg/comments/1kybl2/sex_moves_and_a_table_full_of_straight_guys_is/

    Ctrl-F for ‘three’ and there’s a general description of the less sexy AW hack (AW Lite).

    Maybe someone else can do some more digging from here.

  5. Thanks for trying to dig this up; when my server comes out of storage in a couple of months I’ll get the text and put a copy on Google Drive and share it.
