After 17 months of sweat and tears and dozens, if not hundreds, of play-tests, the Urban Shadows Kickstarter is finally ready to launch! Words cannot describe how excited and anxious I am right now. The official launch date is tomorrow (Tuesday June 3rd) but I wanted you, the members of our community, to get a sneak peek at the site before anyone else. Take a look around, leave a comment if you’d like and enjoy the preview!

Haven’t checked in much lately and I apologize for that. I’ve been super busy getting ready for the Kickstarter launch which will (hopefully) be happening this week. I’ll keep you all posted as that comes to fruition. I’m super excited and super nervous. =)

Going to GenCon 2014 and want to be a part of the first official Urban Shadows Longcon? Then you need to sign up! +Tommy Rayburn and I are running THREE nightly sessions of the game set in Detroit, a city writhing in supernatural despair. Will you be able to resist the darkness within you, or let it swallow you whole?

We have six spots left in our first slot and plenty in the follow-ups.

I know things have been quiet on the community lately, but don’t fret, we’re still actively working on the Urban Shadows release. We will keep you up to date as we get tangible goals completed.

For my own part, I’m playing in an U-S one-shot tomorrow night and I’ll be playing a Wizard for the first time. I’m super excited! Also, next weekend I will be running what-will-probably-be the concluding session of my current urban shadows game. It’s been an awesome ride so far with a group of mostly rpg-newbs. =)

My Urban Shadows campaign is nearing an end and our Hallowed, who is the descendant of Saint George and possessing his magical dragon-slaying sword Ascalon, is gearing up to battle Sludgebelly, the Dragon at the base of the Detroit River.

Here’s what I’ve come up with for Sludgebelly;

Claws/Bites 3-harm hand messy ap

Breath Weapon 4-harm area close fire

Armour 4

When Unleashing and Studying the dragon, take a -2. When Persuading Sludegbelly with threats, you don’t.

I think our Dragon-slayer to be is in for some pain. :)

Our Apocalypse World game was cancelled last night, so I invited a few people over for a one-shot of Urban Shadows set in 1879 Arizona. We had Prof. Dr. Elsa Vaughan Braun the steam-punk Wizard, Laughing Fox the Aware and Sham Hazzy the Fae. It was a great main cast of characters and I really enjoyed foreshadowing and narrating a weird and wild west. The moves worked out very well in the alternate period.

I suspect future sessions will follow and am anxious for it.

Thanks to Sean Dalziel Rob Wakefield and Aaron Friesen  for their participation!

Hello fellow urban shades!

Hello fellow urban shades!

Hello fellow urban shades! It’s been too long since I’ve posted anything regarding the progress of US. You’ll be happy to know we’re on schedule for our Kickstarter and eventual release, which is exciting and scary all at the same time.

One thing I would love some feedback on is chapter names and headers. I have an idea of naming the chapters after different parts of a metropolis. Here is what I have so far, please let me know if or what you like and what you might change if you were doing this. Thanks in advance! 😀

I The Suburbs: Introduction

II The Tracks: Rules Intro

III The Subway: The Moves

IV The Alleyways: Factions & Debt

V Downtown: The Archetypes

VI Uptown: Character Improvement

VII The Streets: Archetype Breakdown

VIII City Hall: The Master of Ceremonies

IX The Strip: Your Opening Session and Threats

X The Docks: A Different Shade

City Map: Index & Mediography

Of course, these are preliminary names for as of yet undefined chapters. Chapter numbers and functionality are subject to change.

Russel mentioned this blog post earlier today and I just found it. It’s very well written and speaks highly of the Corruption mechanic especially. It was a great read, I recommend it.

We’re starting a new Apoc World game tonight and in the past we’ve had a couple cases of PC’s trying to kill one another. So to help out, i wrote a quick and dirty custom move for any potential future repeats of this.

When two protagonists try to kill each other, they both roll+hard and both roll+Hx to Interfere with one another. On a 10+, they choose 2. On a 7-9, they choose 1:

-Increase the harm they’re inflicting by 1

-Decrease the harm they’re suffering by 1

-Give themselves +1 forward

-Offer their opponent an xp to call a cease-fire

On a miss, the MC does whatever the fuck he wants to both of you.

What do you think? It’s simple, but sometimes I feel that’s best.
