Last month, for the first time ever, the Apocalypse World Random NPC Generator on my website received more hits than the South Park Character Creator. Just thought I’d share.

PbtA Dice Odds, for whom it may concern: Although it’s tempting to consider the 7-9 range in AW as being the most likely due to our well-drilled acknowledgment of the 7 as the apex of the 2-12 bell curve, that range spans only 3 numbers, which narrows its likelihood to exactly the same as the failure range which spans 5 numbers (note this is without modifiers):

2-6 = 41.67%

7-9 = 41.67%

10-12 = 16.67%

Some people (I’m looking at you, James Stuart) want a little more in their cyberpunk adventures than just slapping in some bioware and killing  a bunch of techobaddies.  This might be the ticket, recently announced by Green Hat Designs: “HEADSPACE” (now in playtesting).  The game’s author Mark Richardson promises to deliver “Emotional  Cyberpunk, Powered by the Apocalypse”…

Over on BFA, a person called auburney has released a preliminary version of VIKING WORLD – a reskinning of the basic AW rules with some interesting mods for armor and weapons.  Check it out and provide feedback at the link below:

This is the GM’s map for my Apocalypse: Vegas (AW) campaign.  The city is semi-formally divided up amongst a number of hardholders and gangs.  Unlike most other AW maps I’ve seen (or drawn), since this is a “hometown” campaign we already had the roadmap, and in this campaign, it’s important to know whose turf you’re on.  Of course I expect these boundaries to begin shifting real soon 🙂

Here are some MC moves for a game of Middle-Aged Adventurers.

– Have a young adult NPC beat them at their best skill

– Give them a pot belly, grey hair, mole or bald spot

– Give them hot flashes/mysterious pain in a random body part

– Make them have an affair they don’t feel good about

– Make them buy expensive things that typically appeal to younger people

– Alter the colloquial meaning of a favorite word or phrase

– Make fun of their taste in clothing, hair or music

So I wrote this little table of skeletal NPC Complications.  Depending on the game you play, you could just use it straight-up in NPCGen, or you could use it as an MC Move.  (For a PC-employed NPC, for example, this might be “Activate their stuff’s downside”).  Roll 2d6 and brainstorm based on your campaign and known NPC details:

2 = Disaster/Emergency, natural or otherwise OR savagely attacked by someone

3 = Psychological/Physical abuse, brainwashing, coersion, codependency OR lying sociopath

4 = Being extorted/vandalized/threatened/ blackmailed by someone, OR playing for sympathy

5 = Personal/family/friend’s addiction/illness OR lying about who’s really addicted/sick

6 = Owes someone/lost a gamble/took a loan and can’t pay it OR throwing good money after bad

7 = Being extorted by someone with local authority but they’re innocent OR so the story goes

8 = The problem isn’t personal, but a person they love has a problem OR they see it that way

9 = Bitter rival, monopolist, once-friend-now-enemy, family feud OR yes but we started it

10 = Someone they know is robbing/sabotaging them OR they are robbing/sabotaging someone

11 = Their selfish acts are being exposed OR they are exposing someone’s selfish acts

12 = It’s Magic!  OR something, something, something, Maelstrom…
