An article from last year that I found taking about reimagining the US as megacities and regions rather than by state. It talks about conflict between urban and back water non-urban areas dictating economy and politics. Seems very cyberpunk;

So one of the things I like to do for my Sprawl games to take something old and turn it into something new. This has happened several times to the Knights Templar in real life. Originally a “corp” that was used during the crusades to take holy sites and protect travellers, they became one of the largest, irchest, and most dangerous organisations in Europe, until declared heretical and outlawed. In modern times there is a criminal organization in Mexico that has taken up their name , the : Los Caballeros Templarios Guardia Michoacana or Knights Templar—Guard of Michoacán. Estenially the idea of Knights living up to a code have taken over a portion of mexico, adopted an ethical code, and warred with other drug cartels. Also they have been repurposed as the villain in the Assassin’s Creed games in a way that makes sense for a brotherhood that is mistrusted and shrouded in secrecy. Be it the imagery, or the conspiracy that keeps this idea of repurposing the past for the future, I have found artists that are in the same way inspired to show a futuristic vision of these ancient order.

So, I’ve kind of been obsessing over a way to do this.

So, I’ve kind of been obsessing over a way to do this. Since I read the World of Darkness: Chicago for the chronicles of Darkness line I have been trying to find a way to simulate factions acting against each other in ways that are both subtle and political on one hand, and overt and aggressive on the other. I’ve looked at both fronts from apocalypse world and dungeon world, and factions from Stars Without Number. I am now looking at 2ed Apocalypse world threats. During this research I cam across the Unruly tag which has you create subfactions within the faction and have them periodically make moves against one another. I want to do that in the sprawl. I want to have a group of lower level, city-bound factions act against one another in the background while the player characters do things. What frame work would be good for building small faction moves to not only relate to their attention on the players but each other?

So I’m MCing the sprawl this coming Monday, and one of the inspirations I threw out there for my players was a Prohibition Inspired city-state of Chicago. For me that means corruption, the mob, and most importantly the smuggling of vices. So my question is should I use scarcities from Apocalypse World during character creation to define what the city state is banning? Or is there another mechanic to get across a theme of illegal resource control?
