Andrew Medeiros archetype posts make me hungry to play this.

When you drink way too much gain the condtion_drunk_ and roll+volatile.

On a 10+ choose 1

Om a 7-9 choose 2

– You have a major league screw up

– You pass out soon

– You can’t remember anything the next day

On the next day replace drunk with hungover

Anything wrong with that move?

In Session 1 and 2

In Session 1 and 2

(Session report originally by Regine Bernhardt

hasty and weak translation by me)

Cal the Selkie

– kissed the Queen, was in a fight with the Queen and got declared “weird” by the Queen

– explained fluid mechanics better then the physics teacher Mrs. Grey (by using weird selkie glyphs and experience instead of actual physics). Mrs. Grey didn’t care though

– turned on another guy by deepthroating herings

– Asked tons of questions because he doesn’t understand how to human

– Pissed of the Queen by mentioning that he want’s his pelt clothes back, by not accepting/understanding her gender role and because he mentioned that he is used to kill disabled people where he comes from

– Took the last name of Shawn’s because he doesn’t have one of his own

– after a lot of turning on, moved in with Shawn for the week as long as his parents aren’t there

Ray, The Queen

– suspects the Vampire of taking drugs and blames the Selkie

– brought the drained Vampire to the nurse and made out with her on the way

– helped to safe the life of the bleeding Nurse (not knowing where these bite like wounds come from)

– Fought and kissed the Selkie and then declared him weird/hopeless

– Got detention by confronting drugdealing student Douglas in the cafeteria and taking his drugs away

– threatend to expose the relationship between Douglas and the principal

– Confronted Andrew (also involved with drugs) by hitting him in the face and took all his drugs

– got his phone back from the Selkie (the phone has a little crown/tiara and says “QUEER”)

Lili the Vampire

– got her shirt soaking wet by being to close to the Selkie

– got her picture taken by Jaqueline, showing Lili halfnaked and in a compromising position with the Infernal

– got send to the nurse because she looked super sick (needed blood)

– Made out with the Queen when he brought her to the nurse

– feed of the nurse and got blood all over her

– asked the Queen for help in the aftermath, saying she had no idea waht happend to the nurse

– spend the rest of the day in a way too big jacket of another student to not walk around in just a bra all day

– confronted Jackie about the picture but didn’t get much done

– stopped the infernal from her “let’s just make out in the cafeteria for everyone to see and they will stop talking about the picture” plan

– Got told by the Infernal’s brother that the picture is no big deal

– decided to go swimming with them, to wash of the blood she still feels on herself

– gazed into the abyss to know why everyone is suddenly hot for her

– got super down of the realization and attempted to get a goth/emo outfit together to show that

Mike the Infernal

– tried to figure out what is up with the Vampire (they are besties) but didn’t made much progress

– promised Mrs. Grey to look into joining the student newspaper

– gave the Vampire her jacket so that she wouldn’t need to walk around in only a bra or wet shirt all day

– got her picture taken by Jaqueline, implying she and Vampire are more then just friends

– confronted Jackie but was more turned on by her then anything

– nearly kissed Jackie

– got pissed because the Selkie was making sweet with the guy she thought was into her brother

– got calmed down by her brother about the picture

– learned, through spooky powers, that Sharon (who is in a wheelchair) doesn’t actually need her wheelchair

– got an invitation to apply to the Columbia River Society for gifted young Scholars (they are a big deal)

– also learned that their “recruiter” Alexander actually is cheating/bribing his way into staying in the CRS because his grades aren’t good enough.

An Observation:

Monsterhearts makes it easy to play your character even though you don’t know who they are yet and even helps you through the mechanics to get to know them

In our game right now I don’t really know who Lilly is yet.

(We spend the first half of the last session with creating a homeroom and doing background etc. for characters so I had only about half a session to get to know my character. That certainly also features into this)

I did however always know what I would do in a scene because the game gives me a limited number of buttons to press. You only have a few moves and all of these require you to act in a certain way. Not only that though. The other players also tell you what subset of buttons you should press this session. Highlights leave you with 5ish buttons that you get extra rewarded for pressing. So when you don’t know what to do you can just decide what button you want to press (and you have an incentive to choose specific ones) and then decide how that would look like. Through that a certain pattern of behaviour and speech emerges that will tell you what your character is like.

(And then the singleton rule will further “limit” you after you pressed a button)

In addition to that other characters will use moves against you and you need to decide how you deal with that. Especially getting Shut Down and being turned on require you to make a decision about how your character reacts and thereby creates a little precedent in your mind.

So when you don’t know who your character is – make moves! They will require you to decide who they are.

Monsterhearts is also better at this then let’s say Dungeon World because MH moves are mostly social in nature while DW moves are mostly physical in nature. Knowing how your Paladin kills a Fell-Unicorn tells us less about their personality (although it definitely can) then knowing how the Chosen bullies someone they turned on a scene ago.

Livin the Blackwood Nightmare

Livin the Blackwood Nightmare

Livin the Blackwood Nightmare

We (Regine Bernhardt Markus Wagner Philipp Neitzel  and Sascha Müller) are starting a game of Monsterhearts! Hooray.

Last session we got together to set up the town and area the game is set in (as well as talk about the content we are comfortable with and triggers)

We used the setting question by Richard Williams.

The game is set on the fictional Island of Blackwood, close to Cape Disappointment.  Blackwood is mostly a tourist town with people coming for health tourism, business conferences/workshops and for whale watching. Besides the tourism industry there isn’t much going on though. Mostly fishing. Most kids leave right after finishing Blackwood High but most come back after they are done studying so this town is missing the whole college population, making the graduating class in school the coolest kids in town.

Important locations are

The Old Lighthouse – make out point or party location

The two beaches (one is privately owned by some tourism people, the other is far away and not as cool)

The harbor wall – as the main meeting place and lounging about area for teens

The not fully named ice caffe – main place for “first dates” and stuff like that. Owned by my characters family.

A main inspiration for Blackwood was Lovecraft from the Locke & Key comic

There is a lot of diversity on the island because a lot of the tourism people that developed Blackwood are not white. There are no native americans on the island though, that is one of the reasons settlers settled on this island originally. Natives always stayed clear of the island because of a curse or something like that.

You need to take a ferry to the main land, it takes about 45ish minutes. The ferry owners are an important and rich family in the town.

Once a year there is the whale festival and that is a big deal.

Blackwood High is “ruled” by the

Columbia River Society for gifted young Scholars

a study group/elite type of deal. Set up by the ancient Blackwood they get a lot of founding and only the really rich AND intelligent/dilligent students can enter. They are the upper class of students because they can regulary get out of Blackwood and bring back contraband and stuff. They go to state and nation wide contests and stuff.

The Drama Group all got killed in a ferry accident about half a year ago.

Up there also are the jocks and cheerleaders (Go Orcas Go!) who think they are on top because that is what society and media tells you.

There is a local circle of witches that are pissed off because they built a basketball court/hall directly on their ancient ritual ground.

other groups within Blackwood High are the Emos+Goths, Student Newspapers, EcoFriendlies and then the lower class children of fisherman providing the white trash and the children of newcomers (many of them not white) that are the up coming class.

We talked a bit about the characters we want to play and we have

A Queen that leads a StraightEdge clique that all look highly androgynous and can be rather violent. Played by Philipp Neitzel

A Selkie curious about humanity. Played by Markus Wagner

An Infernal whose Dark Power is her mother who died last year. She communicates with her with the dairy she got when she tried to get over the trauma. Played by Regine Bernhardt

A freshly (vampire) bitten cheerleader (not that kind of cheerleader) that just got over a break up. Played by me.

If I forgot anything, please add.
