Angel

Angel

Angel

The angel is a healer, medic, shaman, doctor or wound dresser. They fill an important role that keeps others from dying. A hardhold without a medic is highly vulnerable. Therefore Angels will most likely have a bit of immunity. Don’t tempt them to far though or you will find yourself as slave in the dungeon.

Expect the GM to hit you with medicinal problems that everyone expects you to solve. If there are a lot of Hard characters in your game they will always give you extra work. So think how you can get the bling to keep your angel kit in check and how much you charge.

Other characters bring death.

You can bring life.

This is a move of the Tribal playbook that I am not really happy with, especially because it makes you roll twice for a single move. How would you change it?

Bushwack: Prepare before going aggro or seizing by force, which could mean anything from hiding a weapon behind your back to setting snares or even just waiting until nightfall. Right before you make your move, roll +Sharp. On a 10+

pick 3, and on a 7-9 pick 1:

• The enemy is vulnerable. You inflict either +1 or AP harm.

• The enemy is disorganized. They inflict -1harm.

• Your position is secure, and provides you with cover worth 1-armor. •

The enemy is cut off, and may not retreat the same way they came.

The problem with custom Monsterhearts skins is when they start with a monster and then retrofit a teenage problem into it. Start with the problem and then find a monster that fits that theme. Right? Wrong?

This is my theory about different kinds of complexity a move/class/playbook/game can have. What do you people think about it?

“For World games I distinguish between different complexities.

Understanding complexity

How difficult is a move to read and understand. If it has a lot of moving parts it is harder to wrap your head around, especially when it refers to other moves, mechanics, items etc. that people are not familiar with usually. Also moves that make you choose a few things from a list can be harder to understand since you need to compare different combinations of things you can and can’t get to fully get what the move is doing.

Handling complexity

How complex is the actual process of using the move at the table? A bad example for this might be Druid Shapeshift when it is a new form and now the GM has to come up with moves to give you. Another can be ritual or preparation of your spells.

In short, the longer you need to spend on talking through the mechanical interactions of a move the longer

Strategic complexity

How complex is it for you to actually trigger the move? When the move trigger is obscure or vague you might not find (or miss) opportunities for you to use that move. This is related to Understanding complexity but you still could have moves that you constantly forget to apply because their triggers are weird.

Ritual can also be a great example for this because ritual allows you to do EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING is hard to wrap your head around.

Fictional complexity

This is also a bit arcane.

How much does having this move change the things happening to you? When you take a move that gives you 2 loyal followers suddenly 2 new characters are added to the game and everyone needs to keep them in mind. If you get a minor godly power people might come and worship you. In a way the story gets more complex because you now have these capabilities.

It is also strongly related to fictional effectiveness and potentially mindshare effectiveness.”

So when someone or something denies you your rights

Can you deny yourself one of your rights and then have to figure out how you deal with that?

Potentially this could happen when 1 right of yours is in direct confrontation with another right you have.

I could see this happen when you have met someone that is exhilerating, intoxicating and you have to give them a boon that forces you to not use your right. You are denying it yourself because you have other things to do.

Hello People!

I want to run or play a roleplaying game. Until now i couldn’t make up my mind what game it will be though. So I just opened this event to see if people are interested in playing. We can figure out the game together!

Kasper Brohus Allerslev will be running a One-Shot Session of Urban Shadows and has the following to say:

I’ll GM this like a “first session” in AW. Basically, we’ll just follow the characters around and see them do what they do.

The average day in AW is a pretty shitty one, but I figure that the everage day in US is a pretty fucked up one instead.

Weird magics abound. Rawr.

Are there any best practices for when someone isn’t really following their Darkest Self description even though they are in it? It feels bad to say “no. i feel like you should go more for it!” or something like that. How do you deal with this at the table?

A question about character motivation.

A question about character motivation.

A question about character motivation.

When i play my character; what drives me to get involved with what is going on in the game? There is all that faction politics thing going on, there might be threats to the city etc. But nothing of that might matter to my character right?

In Apocalypse World i need to deal with the people in power because otherwise i don’t get to eat. Scarcity is driving me to get involved. There are less people and so there are less jobs. I need to get my jingle from somewhere so i do weird jobs.

That is not true in a modern city. I can work a normal job in a callcenter and get my food at the Walmart. I can have normal friends that don’t deal with the supernatural politics that are going on.

How do you deal with such a character? It is perfectly reasonable to do so. The only thing I am seeing right now is the beginning of session move; when i fail it. Otherwise i can just live a really normal live, especially as a mortal.

How does the system handle that?
