Hypnotic Vampires and Jessica Jones

Hypnotic Vampires and Jessica Jones

Hypnotic Vampires and Jessica Jones

Hypnotic is maybe the most powerful and invading move in the game. Nothing else can just force characters to do something. It was a no-brainer for my Vampire to pick it up eventually. In the end I didn’t do anything too terrible with it (worst thing was probably to make another student jump out of a window and break her leg).

Then I watched Jessica Jones and saw how terrible mind control actually is. Then I thought about what I could have actually done with the move and was sick to my stomach. Forcing the straight edge Queen to drink or to show what kind of genitalia they actually have are jsut one example.

So I decided for myself that if we play another season of this game that my character will have seen JJ and decide for herself that using that power is terrible and just freaking wrong.

I will not use it anymore. It’s just sickening to myself now.

Of course a player could simply X-card me when I would have done such shit and I generally pay attention to my other players in order to not do stuff that would make them uncofortable or would fuck over their character but the option was there.

I still might use it in Darkest Self though. That is kinda what it is for but I am scared of that.

Fun things to do with the Protege’s Mentor:

– they are in prison

– they are family

– they are dead and you only communicate through visions/memories/mystical summons

– they forced it all on you

– you were always their second choice

– you blackmailed them into training you

– they are very overprotective

– they only took you in because they know you otherwise would become a supervillain

– you are their clone

– both of you were sent from another planet, you were older and should protect them but you got caught in the…. okay just the premise of Supergirl okay?

AW Fortune Rolls

AW Fortune Rolls

AW Fortune Rolls

Fortune Rolls are a tool in Blades in the Dark that the GM can use to “disclaim decision making”.

My favorite way to use it is  _”When you need to make a determination about a situation the PCs aren’t directly involved in and don’t want to simply decide the outcome.”_

Of course there are moments when the outcome is clear or when I want a specific outcome as part of a move against a specific character. But not always.

The first thing that came to mind is using it when Hardholds go against each other. Making a 2d6 roll for both works perfectly but what do they roll with I wondered. Then I though fractals (as in fractal Fate). Why couldn’t Hardholds, Gangs, Groups etc. have stats to roll with if needed?

The Hardhold stats can be taken from their armory, number of fighting people etc. right? I haven’t thought this through a 100% (because my next AW game isn’t starting until next year most likely) but I want to use this method when I run AW going forward.

It’s not a technique I want to use too much but I think it can be helpful when I don’t really care about specific outcomes.

Doing an assault on a hardhold with 2 rolls (Attack+Defend) creates a much more nuanced result then I would come up by myself.

The “problem” with it would be that they are not really moves that I roll. Much more like Oracles. It feels a bit cheaty but principles etc are still in play so stuff should be fine.

The other thing I want to do is mainly use countdown clocks instead of the traditional AW system of fronts. Instead of breaking down each danger into a clock with 5 segments and having to decide when what happens etc. I can just make a clock for their next bigger thing and mark that off when I feel like it.

In the end 3 linked clocks create much the same thing as a 6 segment clock with each segment having a specific thing happening but I anticipate this working way better for me. It’s also much easier to set up while I MC the game.

Some thoughts on Magical Girls in Masks and the Legacy

Some thoughts on Magical Girls in Masks and the Legacy

Some thoughts on Magical Girls in Masks and the Legacy

Yesterday I was thinking about Magical Girls and how they fit quite well into Masks. Multiple Playbooks can fit (even the Doomed when you go with a Madoka route…) and then thought about the Magical Girl show I saw the most of.

Wedding Peach.

(ye old Magical Girl show but a lot about love and relationship dramas. Importantly the characters transformed into wedding dresses before putting on their magical girl fighting costumes)

I thought of how a newly chosen of that “type” of power might find it offensive. It can be seen as giving a bad rolemodel to women when they are told “you have to get married super fast and that will be the best and then you will be ultra happy”. That doesn’t mix well with emancipation and strong, independent women.

So of course I thought this would be a Legacy character that is the newest bearer of that power with former angels of love still in the city.

That isn’t really how that works in Magical Girls though. There usually is not an old mentor type figure, maximum there is a magical guide animal that tells them everything and then they are on there own. Sometimes there is an old queen type character but they are not around, more of a mystical figure. (that is just from what I know from limited experience with the genre)

So does the Legacy really fit here? The Legacy works great when you are Kid Flash with a second Flash around and also old Jay Garrick but does it work for the chosen one of a mystical power? For the reborn hero?

In a sense a character like that is way closer to the Bearer by Sean Dunstan.

Who do you play when you want to encompass the role that has been given to you but have internal problems with the values that are associated with it? It feels like the Legacy but does that work or are there weird things that can happen there?

Hey Brendan Conway, are you sure that Protege move should work that way?

Been reading the files:

When you encounter a superpowered being…

As written this move would trigger EVERY time you met anyone that has superpowers, including your teammates. Even when you define encounter as “first time” it would still trigger not only on villains but on every superhero you met as well. Seems too disruptive in gameplay.

Suggested fix:

When you encounter a superpowered being for the first time in play, you may roll+superior.

The move would also get a lot out of the Spout Lore clause, i.e.

“The GM might ask you “How do you know this?” Tell them the truth, now.” to add a bit of fictional explanation to the whole study thing. There is a difference between Robin pulling stuff from the Batcomputer, Batgirl checking her internet database while fighting the threat or Squirrel Girl pulling out villain trading cards etc.

The GM might also ask what history their teacher has with the superpowered being etc.
