Well got an actual play of my Tournament of Fate scenario recorded (still need to edit and process the recording).

We had:

Ann: The Divine, sent to guide a chosen person toward their role in things. A blonde woman with (literally) starry eyes and rumpled clothing.

Branwen: The Changeling, a Valkyrie with death magic powers who is potentially related to Ann.

Atomic Robo: Yes, one of the players took the Action Scientist and played Atomic Robo. One of his weapons was: Jenkins 3-Harm Human WMD.

For roles, Ann was the Wielder, having obtained the Chalice sometime prior to the scenario. Branwen was the Friend, and thus had 1 more point of Luck (4 instead of 3) and Atomic Robo (and his team) was the Conjured, who had been called in to the dimension to help out.

As we determined, Ann warped dimensions to bring Atomic Robo in to help Branwen (her chosen person) only Robo made some muttering comment about wishing whoever was responsible for this being stuck in the situation with him and so Ann was sucked down to the material plane herself. Then they rescued Branwen from some over eager ghost hunters who thought the half-Valkyrie was some sort of ghost lady.

For competition in the tournament, they got lucky on the random rolls and pulled both Fred Teague and Cacile (both the Bystander competitors) Fred’s team ended being the team that had tried to trap Branwen and Ann turned out to be obliquely responsible for the shadow spirit Cacile receiving some sort of past divine censure. The other two enemy wielders were the immortal samurai Nasato and the blood sorcerer Yoni Kavik.

I’ll leave it there for now and save the rest for when I edit the five hours of audio.

However, it involved zombie apocalypse advisories, geysers of coca cola, ninjas, torrents of bleach and teleportation fumbles.

Okay, since my original schedule is clearly scrapped.

Okay, since my original schedule is clearly scrapped.

Okay, since my original schedule is clearly scrapped. I’m just going to do two more one-shots this week, one for the Don’t Let the Sun Go Down scenario and one for the Tournament of Fate Scenario.

Tomorrow I want to focus on the Tournament of Fate Scenario.

So Posting this primarily to the Monster of the Week Community.

I can start somewhere between 6am to 12pm because I need to have sleep and I need to be off before 5pm for a normal game with regular friends.

That would be a start time of 4pm to 10pm Central Standard Time in the United States and lasting somewhere between 3 and 5 hours depending. It’s MotW so I don’t expect it to take too long. (I’ve run this scenario in 4 hours)

If anybody is interested please respond and message me an email to send an invite to, I just make a fresh Event at whatever time people are interested in playing.

(Also, I cleaned up the previous adverts…and this one will get cleaned up as well…if we get a successful session, the actual play will be linked in the Actual Play category)

Just a Game Powered by the Apocalypse Rules.

You’re logging up on the computer, happily cracking open the brand new shiny MMO you just downloading from the company site, ready to make your character and start on a new set of adventures. But something changes when you click “start playing”….because instead of watching a load screen boot up, you find the world turning black and when you wake up it seems like you’ve become your character and the world around you is…is the tutorial mission. What the hell is going on here?

A thread on the Fate-Core community came up asking if anybody was doing X-Com based Fate came up and I mentioned I had a couple of lists for creating Operation names for the MotW game I was prepping for. So I posted this as per request and they suggested I publish it on its own.

It’s not going to show up on my home page since I buried it as being supposedly published July 1st so that my brother and our friend don’t stumble on it.

They don’t know these lists exist.

I’m also including the 23 operation names I’ve made to encompass “Season 1” of the campaign: (23 operations, 23 episodes to a season)

So I was writing up some MotW stats for some characters from different franchises (and am still tempted to do more) and came across a couple of issues that caused me to tweak things.

For example Mai Taniyama from Ghost Hunt experiences growing psychic abilities over the course of the show. For example, she is often able to see spirits even when normal people can’t. But, for the most part, her greater psychic abilities only come fully in effect while she is asleep and dreaming. During such times she can often see the spiritual terrain for miles, have conversations with spirits who often give her clues as to what is happening and can frequently catch glimpses of whatever the source of all the trouble is.

So when I changed her Playbook to Spooky, I marked one of dark side issues as Sleep. Her other related mostly to her nature as an impulsive teenager with new powers and confidence issues. (Mood Swings, Impulse Control) I considered giving her Big Whammy because of the Nine Cuts invocation the Shintoist taught her, but she’s not all that confident with it and decided that was a use magic effect instead of a move.

Then there was Celty as the Monstrous. I could have marked her as the Summoned, there is some hint that her missing head might possibly spark an apocalypse if I remember, but I wasn’t sure on the Apocalypse thing and it wasn’t major, also she is generally liked by most everyone she talks too, even after revealing she has no head, so the Freakish move felt inappropriate. So I went with Monstrous. Which brought the issue of her curse. She’s not particularly vulnerable to anything, she doesn’t need to feed on people. That left Pure Drive and Dark Master. Pure Drive was problematic because normally she’s the most mature and emotionally settled/normal character in her cast. But she does have an obsession with finding her head. I figured that might count as a Dark Master in that she is normal most of the time and then suddenly catches a rumor about her head’s location and drops everything to chase it down. Then I decided to skip the whole thing by having her sixth advance be freed from the curse.

There was also Kate Freelander working for Sanctuary whose primary mission is to defend sentients regardless of whether they are human or not. So for one of her Red Tape issues I put in “Soft Hearted Regulations”

I also did a couple of places where the five given stat blocks didn’t match where I was going for. So did things like switch the positions of a +1 and a +0.

Does anybody else find themselves doing stuff like that?

What are some tweaks you’ve tried?

Also, now that I think on it, Celty might work better as the Divine.

When you shift Playbooks are those unstated moves picked up? And can we get a list of which Playbooks have those unstated moves?

So, a conversation elsewhere got me thinking and I worked this up:

Just for the hell of it: http://thrythlind.blogspot.com/2015/09/urban-fantasy-crossover-scenario.html

I say on that post that it’s too late to run this scenario this weekend, but it is conceivable that I could run this Friday 11pm to 4am my time (9am to 2pm Friday CST).

I could also try to run this Friday after this one since I’m already running 9 one-shots from the 18th to the 23rd.

The specific scenario would depend on just what characters are involved but it would be a cross-reality apocalypse prevention thing.

It occurs to me that Nick from Grimm exists in this odd cross section of Chosen, Expert, Initiate and Spooky

On the Tournament of Fate one-shot, I have decided that the Wielder is NOT going to be a required role.

Of course if no one decides to be the Wielder that means all five artifacts fell into the hands of other people/things and your group has failed to get a hold of one (or lost theirs) to this point.
