Wow, did that go well!

Wow, did that go well!

Wow, did that go well! I ran a game of Masks for the first time for a group who has had very limited exposure to PbtA games. Two had played a few sessions of Dungeon World, one had a lot of RPG experience but had never heard of the system, and the fourth had only ever played one session of Dresden Files, so had almost no RPG experience. It was a rousing success with many demands to play again as soon as possible.

The Players:

The Silver Phaser – A Martial Arts/Phasing Beacon.

Chaos – A flesh transmuting Transformed with hyper-senses.

Whirlwind – A Nova with elemental control

Sublimino – A psionic Doomed.

On a warm, summer afternoon, the heroes arrive at Freedom Square, soon to be the site of a concert/festival celebrating Hero’s Day. Freedom Square is a large outdoor area in the heart of Halcyon City’s downtown district, a park surrounded by gleaming skyscrapers. They arrive early because they know the Mayor is going to be making a speech and they have evidence to suggest that an unknown villain could be making a play for the Mayor or his family. They’ve already rescued the Mayor’s family from the super-assassin, Warmonger (the event that led to their formation as a team).

Just as the Mayor is about to speak from the stage, however, a flash of light draws their attention to the sky. A young hero, Molniya, a member of the prestigious Halcyon City MetroGuard, is hurtled through the sky by an unknown attacker. She slams into the side of a skyscraper and her powers trigger, sending electrical arcs up and down the building. Glass shatters and she and tons of glass shards fall into Freedom Square. People scream and run but they will be slashed to ribbons by the falling chunks of glass! The heroes spring into action! Chaos stretches his malleable flesh over a girl scout troop, shielding them. Silver Phaser leaps up and makes contact with Molniya, phasing both of them so they pass harmlessly into the ground. Whirlwind uses a gust of wind to sweep the remaining glass from the sky, diverting it away from the civilians (Here was my first mistake, I didn’t familiarize myself enough with the playbooks and forgot to have the Nova charge up her powers. Know the playbooks, especially with rookie players! Lesson learned).

The danger was just beginning, however, as a powerful being, The Supreme Soviet, hero of the Soviet Union descended from the sky into the square, demanding that Molniya be turned over to him immediately. In our version of the world, the Soviet Union never fell and the cold war has been raging for decades. The Supreme Soviet’s allies, Rasputin (a technomancer), and Molotov ( a being of liquid fire) also attacked. Rasputin, from the roof of a skyscraper, placed a force field over the square, trapping everyone in. Molotov flowed up over a Honduran food truck and assumed human form, so hot that rivulets of melted steel flowed down the sides of the food truck, baking the poor people inside.

Highlights:

Sublimino in an elevator, calmly tapping his foot to the muzak as he rises to the roof to face Rasputin.

Whirlwind failing to protect the food truck, causing it to explode and killing the people within.

Chaos bolstering his teammates through their psychic link, keeping them going and clearing conditions.

The Silver Phaser facing down Supreme Soviet and refusing to let his labels be shifted.

The battle was crazy, chaotic, violent, and so much fun. People were hurt and, through some horribly timed failed rolls, killed. But people were also saved. Influence was gained, influence was lost. The team pool was used very effectively as they helped each other out. Conditions were cleared by timely pep talks. The doom clock crept inexorably forward.

At the end, the players were delighted. The two who had never played PbtA games had no idea that a system so light could be so deep and challenging. They all commented that they felt like they were part of a story that they helped write rather than playing in just another RPG session.

Well done, Brendan Conway, you have a handful of new converts!

The Outsider, a Rock-n-roll goddess, ended up stealing the casino’s entire vault. Which was enough Cessium to keep her planet running for 100 years. Sure, she got electrocuted (a lot), but that’s Earth for ya.

And if that wasn’t enough, she stole the protege’s neglected girlfriend.

Masks Session 1

Masks Session 1

Masks Session 1

We started playing Masks. Apart from establishing some about the characters and doing our first fight we didn’t got much done but I always count Hangout First Sessions as needing two sessions.

So we have:

The Legacy: Jaqueline Juarez aka Jaq of the Jungle

Jaq belongs to a line of Jungle Girls/Women (think https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/81/bd/86/81bd862e4fe8b5c9ed2168e301b3fe5d.jpg). She was however born in Halycon City and is a city girl through and through. She had a nice trainee program in a hip company lined up and everything when she was asked to continue the Legacy. Part of the deal at least are Superhuman Speed, God-like beauty and Inhuman Might. The two women before her are still around, as is Agent Orang – the nemesis of their line (basically a Gorilla Grod type character – might also draw some inspirations from the Mad Monkey later on…)

Jaq is struggling with the outdated values and motives of her legacy. She wants to bring this whole Jungle Girl thing into the next century. First thing she did after getting the costume and the status? Add a sports bra to the outfit.

The Bull: Cheryl Harper aka Tiny

TAINEE (Tactical Assault Infantry, iNherent capabilities Enhanced, Experimental) was abducted as a kid by a human supremacist group that pumped her full of experimental super soldier serum and nanotech and all of that jazz before the facility was liberated by Aegis agents. Now she is an androgynous 2 meter big teenage girl living with foster parents.

The Delinquent: Jerome Romero aka Night Moves

NM is a runaway kid, he likes breaking and entering and bringing his own kind of justice. Also occasional burglary maybe. He got his powers of teleportation and emotion control from some weird drug someone mixed in his drink. He used his powers to run away at 18 so he could mery his big love. He is it also who pushes Night Moves to be a hero and do more with his powers. NM sometimes wonders if he uses his emotion control to make him stay in love with him…

(As a GM I am really interested in seeing a heroic character with emotion control. I am still very grossed out by Killgrave from Jessica Jones and this is close. We will see if this power can be used in a good way or will always corrupt)

The team got together in a fight against Sentinel like robots and caused way too much property damage. They did hower get the attention of Fortune’s Fool – an ex Aegis Agent who is now a merc and disillusioned with the whole superhero thing. Think Nick Fury+Joker+Comedian. Mostly Comedian really. I am sure he will show up again.

We had the first fight in the Halycon City NAtural Museum where Dr. Malachit (a second generation nazi scientist that unlocked the mystical crystal energies) tried to steal the Heart of the Amazon, a big gem from Jaq’s homeland. They were able to stop her without anyone getting really hurt (well she got hurt but…)

Next session we will deal with the aftermath of the whole thing and have another player join the game – the concept is among the line of a plant controlling/flower power Nova.

My group had our final session of Masks last night.

My group had our final session of Masks last night.

My group had our final session of Masks last night. I didn’t plan anything and ran the whole session off of love letters, and I was pretty pleased with how it turned out. It turned out that the team’s personal nemeses had stolen a straitjacket golem which acts as a conduit to Hell from the Doomed’s sanctuary. Using that and some salvaged alien technology from the previous session which allowed living minds to be translated into digital form, they were going to upload the legions of hell directly into the world wide web (normally, we’d established, demons need mortal bodies to cross over into our plane; this was a way around that).

The team managed to track them down to the secret research hospital where Goth (the Doomed) had been unsuccessfully treated for cancer and made her deal with Mephisopheles (her nemesis, naturally) to save her life. The hospital, it turned out, was owned by Starsinger Industries, the same company which had been restoring the aforementioned alien technology and was currently working on a honey trap for The Collective, an alien armada which had made war on the Earth and ‘liberated’ all of its strong AIs several years prior. NB: that’s all the AIs aside from Command Line (the Beacon, a heroic robot) and Bluescreen (his nemesis, a robot supremacist), as they’d been developed after the invasion. Starsinger Industries is also run by Nightjar (the Protege)’s best friend’s father, and is the only major competitor for Cobb Consolidated, the company owned by Nightjar’s Protege, Owlman. With Mephistopheles and Bluescreen was Thrush, Owlman’s previous sidekick turned supervillain and Nightjar’s personal nemesis who was at the head of the organization the other two belonged to.

So, the team had their big throwdown with the three, stopping the ritual before a dozen young patients at the hospital could be sacrificed. By the end of things, Command Line had reversed the polarity and sucked Bluescreen into Hell, Goth had trapped Mephistopheles, binding him into her soul, and they’d locked up Thrush in Owlman’s secret flying supervillain prison. It was a pretty epic conclusion, and pretty much entirely player-driven. We had two Moments of Truth trigger, most of our dangling threads were tied up, and there were enough left over for a season 2 if we get the chance down the road.

One thing that didn’t come up? Thrush had been known to butt heads with Bluescreen in the past, and had a history of proactively turning on his associates. He had also been hacking into the team’s files, exploiting a secret deal he’d made with Nightjar. So while he helped arrange the ritual and the mass upload, he had an agenda; once it was done, he was going to trigger Starsinger’s honey trap and contact the Collective. The aliens would collect the demon AIs and Bluescreen, and he would permanently cripple two competing villains, while also sparking another invasion for the superheroes he hated so much to fight. Didn’t pan out, but since the team stopped Mephistopheles and Bluescreen he got most of what he wanted anyway, and now he’s back in the headquarters of his old boss, the hero he hates more than anyone. Like I said: plenty of threads for season 2.

All in all, I think it was a pretty great wrap-up. I’d recommend the love letter approach if you’re comfortable with that much improv, as it lead things in some pretty unexpected directions. If you’d like some inspiration, I’ll paste mine below; the structure for all three is pretty much identical, and I tried to present each hero with the choice of a resource, a relationship and some information. Enjoy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Nightjar,
It’s been three weeks since your confrontation with Dr. Jones’s body in the sewers. In the intervening time, Owlman has been bringing you on investigative missions more than usual, attempting to learn as much as possible about what Thrush and his cronies are up to.
Roll +Superior. On a 10+, pick 2. On a 7-9, pick 1.
·          You managed to salvage some of the Titanian nanotech which worked its way in your armor. Tell us how the tech has improved your capabilities, and what the first thing you did with these new capabilities was.
·          Owlman sent you for training with another hero. Tell us who they were, what you learned from them, and the terms you left on.
·          You and Owlman managed to corner and interrogate a villain tied to Thrush’s organization. Who was the villain, and what worrisome secret did they reveal to you?
On a miss, pick 1 but you’ve endangered someone as a result of your investigations. Tell us who you’ve endangered, what the source of that danger is, and how long you think you have until the shoe drops.
Dear Goth,
It’s been three weeks since your confrontation with Dr. Jones’s body in the sewers. In the time since, Saint Anger has approached you to redouble your efforts at combating Mephistopheles’s incursion into the city.
Roll +Freak. On a 10+, pick 2. On a 7-9, pick 1.
·          Saint Anger has gifted you with an item from his supernatural arsenal. What is the item, what is he expecting you do to with it, and what are you actually going to do with it?
·          You’ve managed to repair your stained reputation with one particular person or group. Who was it, what did you have to do to get in their good graces, and what did they offer you in return?
·          Your investigations have found that Mephistopheles has attained a sizable foothold in the city, outside the view of the heroic world. What is the nature of this foothold, and what advantage did your investigations uncover that you can use?
On a miss, pick 1 but something dangerous has gone missing from your sanctuary. Tell us what that something is, why it’s dangerous, and who you suspect of the theft.
Dear Command Line,
It’s been three weeks since your confrontation with Dr. Jones’s body in the sewers. In the time since, Sonja has been cautiously supportive of your heroic efforts.
Roll +Mundane. On a 10+, pick 2. On a 7-9, pick 1.
·          While she was rebuilding you, Sonja installed an experimental upgrade to help keep you safer. What was the upgrade, and where did she have to go to get it?
·          Your heroic efforts have managed to attract the attention of a hero you admire. Who is this hero, and what specific deed did they find so impressive?
·          After talking with the uplifted Dr. Jones and helping to repair his code, he revealed another dangerous project that Starsingers Industries is working on. Tell us what the project is, and why it worries you.
On a miss, pick 1 but while you were reinforcing the team hideout’s digital defenses you found evidence that Thrush used his backdoor to make off with dangerous intel from your mission computer. Tell us what that intel was, and why it worries you.
