Had a short oneshot today. Go team Underdogs! We rolled with an Outsider, a Bull, and the Doomed. Thanks Dan Luxenberg for running.

I played Citizen 1, alias Una Marr, a 5th columnist from Communist Atlantis. (Atlantis was introduced to Communism after a failed mission in 1960 by Yuri Gangarin; he introduced ideals but told nobody, hoping to keep his Secret Army as an ace-in-the-hole if he ever fell out of the party’s favor. He died at age 32, so the secret was buried with him.)

Being free from outside influence, Atlantis succeeded as a communist country, and after a delayed invasion (during which the Soviet Union collapsed), they started infiltrating the world instead of conquering it. Una, 15, is the first operative in Halcyon City.

Her rival was the angry Panther, daughter of Madame Machina and Faceless Man. Panther was a combat MACHINE, rolling 10+ on every Engage-an-enemy check. As brutal a front-liner as you could hope for.

Her sister Annie-Morph led to our first team-up; as Panther fought her sister, our team stopped her parents. Or tried to; the mission ended up in a destroyed First National Bank.

(Which HEAVILY politicized Citizen 1.)

Our trio was rounded out by Steel(cloud), who had invented a sentient nanite swarm from weird internet outlines. The swarm was powerful, but it would eventually convert his body if he didn’t find a cure.

His garage (where he tinkered with the cloud) was our headquarters, despite his parents being home all the time, since their bank branch was being rebuilt.

The session was brief: we heard the crime alert, borrowed Steel’s parents’ car, and headed to the UN Building. Outside, terrorists from ex Soviet-satellite Tzardonia clashed with police. We defeated them handily (with Panther punching out two different villains without getting a scratch), but hired thug Demolition Man had different plans. In fact, he kept exploding (once when he was pissed off, again when he was knocked unconscious).

Despite our teams’ best efforts, the Adults just didn’t understand. The thugs were arrested but the Tzardonian villains were let off with diplomatic immunity. Our team angrily went for milkshakes. In the closing montage, we found out Panthers’ parents are working with the Tzardonians.

We also saw Citizen 1 walk into the Daily Worker’s offices, disguised as the head diplomat of Tzardonia, and stir the shit by telling the editor…

“I want to destroy the United States!”

Take +1 if you:

-Followed through on something you told them you’d do

-Are clean, well respected, and polite;

-Have influence over their progeny (+1 per child, max +4).

Take a -1 if:

-You’ve been caught getting into trouble

-You got their CHILD into trouble

-They’ve…heard things. About your folks.

On a 10+, they’ll make you dinner, Choose two:

*clear a condition

*take +1 forward

*Learn something embarrassing about one of their kids.

On a 7-9, you can choose one but have to help with the dishes.

So I’m trying to put together a demo game with some friends, and while I love the game, I don’t think my players will be quite the superhero or RPG nerd that I am. So I’m attempting to put together a list of characters who fit into each playbook – from both Marvel and DC – to use as examples. So far, what I’ve come up with is:

The Bull- America Chavez, X-23

The Nova- Wiccan, Justice, Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes)

The Outsider- Starfire, Lucy in the Sky

The Legacy- Superboy, Kid Flash, Wondergirl, Nightwing, Nova (Sam Alexander)

The Protege- Robin, Speedy

The Janus- Spider-Man

The Delinquent- Speed, Chase Masterson

The Doomed- Raven, Veil, Hazmat

The Transformed- Cyborg, Beast Boy

The Beacon- Kate Bishop, Shadowcat

The Innocent – time-travelling X-Men

The Soldier- Patriot

The Star- Striker

The Joined- Stepford Cuckoos, Wonder Twins

The Harbinger- Iron Lad

I know I’m missing a few playbooks, and some more good examples from at least a couple. Any ideas?

I’m a little curious why “Unlock Moment Of Truth” is listed twice on every playbooks advancements.

I’m a little curious why “Unlock Moment Of Truth” is listed twice on every playbooks advancements. I took it as a sign it could happen twice, but someone else suggested it might be because you can’t select advancements below the line after six.

I doubt the later as that is unlike how any other PbtA game works, but it is possible. I still think it’s just so you can have two moments of truth and lock two labels.

When you need to reach quickly an accessible spot, roll +Mundane if you try to reach it normally or +Freak if you use your powers to do so. On a hit, you reach it. On a 10+: pick 1. On a 7-9: pick 2

-You draw attention to you on the way

-It’s longer than you thought

-Your final spot is unstable and your opposition gets an opportunity

-You exhausts yourself and mark a condition

When players had to get to the fight scene while they were somewhere else, or pursue an fleeing vilain, unleashing powers didn’t do the work totally well (7-9 options resulting automaticaly in marking condition or “your move create danger… so you must stop it to manage the danger”), so I propose this custom move ^^

Armature kicking(well punching actually) butt.

Brought to Halycon at a early age to receive life saving surgery after a explosion, sadly her arms and one leg had to be amputated. But that never stopped her and eventually she joined the think tank, Rasnoss, due to her inspired designs for suspension bridge cables that actually could redesign it’s structure based on its load.

It was when Technocrat was sent to SuperMax that a flight of fancy and quick illegal hack into the lab report on his implants gave her the idea to use her invention as a advanced mind controlled prosthetic.

Let’s just say it went better than she expected. Now she can walk again, now she can run again, now she can do things not even normal people can do and she is never going back. She is Armature.

My friend and I have two questions about the Janus:

-When you use your Mask to switch the value of your mundane with your mask’s label, how long does that last?

-If you lock your mundane stat, how does that interact with your Mask?

So hey y’all.

So hey y’all.

I have been working on an alternative take on powers. I felt that the default was just a bit restrictive.

So I’ve written up something that I hope people enjoy, it’s intended in much the same spirit as the alternate harm rules for Apocalypse World.

Let me know what you think.
