Would anyone be interested in running/playing a one-shot game of Monstehearts via a Hangout this coming Friday? I am not wanting to run this time but I will happily play. Friday after 2 PM PST is looking pretty clear.

Played Monsterhearts for the first time.

Played Monsterhearts for the first time.  It was the first role playing game for everyone involved, good times were had.

The Cast:

A wealthy Queen that was tired of her old high school and is looking for a new challenge.

A traumatized Vampire that ran away from his family and the teacher that abused him.

A North-Korean Ghoul that escaped his country but bit by zombies, has powerful cravings for chaos and flesh but still want to do well in school and go to college.

A sympathetic Fae that lives with a grandmother that mistakes the Fae for her long dead child.

Events:

The Ghoul snitches on the Queen to gain favor of the teacher. The Fae attempts to blackmail the Queen and the Vampire, the vampire tries to hypnotize her but fails, in the end neither side got what they wanted. The Queen and the Vampire follows the Fae home for revenge after school, but is interrupted when the Ghoul breaks in to Fae’s house and ate the grandmother’s leg.

The Ghoul plays it cool and convince the Fae that it was a bear. The Fae is marginally convinced, but consider the lie as a promise. The vampire runs into his old math teacher into a coffee shop, the one that abused him and drove him away.

New Patreon release (ha, I did get one in before August ended!). It’s a little Creature from the Black Lagoon, a little Splash, and a whole lot of angry, arrogant teenaged activist.

I’m happy with the archetypes but I am not 100% happy with the moves. I’d love any feedback on them (especially actual play feedback) and may revise the skin based on what I hear.

As always, my Skins are free – please share and gift this as much as you like. A revised Skins for the Skinless including this and the Mummy is on its way.

There’s no mechanic that forces the Ghoul to satisfy hunger – there’s simply no penalty either way for the hunger going unfed.

There’s no explanation in the text for the physicality of a Ghost. For example, if a Ghost jumps off a building, does it break her ghostly legs? Can a ghost eat?

I’m not really wanting answers to these questions per se. I know the answer is “if you have players that get Monsterhearts, they won’t cause these problems to come up” – but that doesn’t seem like very good “system matters” design, does it?

I realize you cannot legislate, in rules, against players who aren’t with the program and I’m not looking for a spot rule against every contigency. It would be good to have a little more information along these lines in the canon of the rules.

Anyone want to try a MH one-shot on 8/31 or 9/1?  Starting around 2-4pm EST.

I’d MC.  Second Skins/Skins for the Skinless/potentially others okay by me.

I didn’t really get until we played our first session that there really no mechanic for opposed rolls.

I didn’t really get until we played our first session that there really no mechanic for opposed rolls. Granted, the span of abilities is pretty narrow, but it is definitely unusual to just have a flat difficulty to make stuff happen no matter what. Anyone have thoughts on what the intent was here? Or any issues in play?

I’ll be running a game to try out the second skin draft on Infrno.net tonight at 7PM pst.

been experimenting with different levels of prep to get some MH one-shots ready. I reckon there’s a few options…

1. Do the first session exactly as in the book and see where it takes you – full choice of Skins, group setting/home room creation, then just play to see what happens. I’ve done this before and it took a while to really sing while some of the Skins circled around each other – but once it hit the ground it worked really well – not sure if I’d be comfortable doing this at a con though because you might not get to the ‘good bits’ in 3/4 hours.

2. Restrict Skin choice and do normal character generation (especially Strings) and have the broad brush strokes of a setting and a Menace or two ready to roll. I’ve done this before at a con and it worked pretty well.

3. Is having pre-picked and developed skins, a tight setting and set-up, and enough material to push a few buttons and see what happens. THIS is what I’ve experimented with, and I think it’s got legs to jump to the juicy stuff sooner – but I’m aware that this kind of thing has been actively discouraged with regards to AW in the past! I’ve done my prep and will playtest this soon.

What do folks think? There’s pros and cons to each, I guess, but will (3) work in play? I can go into more detail on my method of prepping it, too – but that’s probably for another post.
