I’ve just posted the AP report for the game of Troublemakers I ran at Concrete Cow on Saturday 9th: this was played as a down-to-Earth character drama, without any fantastical elements, to test how the system handles that.

I’m hoping to launch my 3 session online playtest of Troublemakers this Friday, the 16th, at 7.30pm GMT and I’d like at least one more player to join in.

Troublemakers is a PbtA game of childhood adventures, inspired by films, TV and books featuring child protagonists, including but not limited to Super 8, Stranger Things, Bridge to Terabithia and the Jonny Maxwell books by Terry Pratchett, the game is about children who go on remarkable adventures and save the day despite the intervention of the adults around them, uncovering secret & wondrous things and maybe even growing up a little in the process. Check out the pitch sheet on the link for more details.

Only 48 hours left on the kickstarter for What Ho, World! We’re past 150% funded, which is amazing – I’m really looking forward to getting this game printed and having a proper physical copy in my hands.

If you’ve managed to avoid my endless promotion of the game over the past month, What Ho, World! is a hybrid roleplaying game/card game based on the genteel, free-wheeling and farcical stories of P.G. Wodehouse, Fred and Ginger musicals and so on.

Over the course of a 2-hour game, you’ll make characters like the naive but well-meaning Gadabout and the stoic and wise Servant, be tasked with challenges like retrieving an embarrassing document or ridding yourself of a small but annoying dog, and call on the gossip of your fellow servants or an unexpected cosh to save the day. It’s all based on the Apocalypse World school of RPG design – discrete chunks of rules for particular situations in the story that only get involved as much as they need to then get out the way again. I’ve heavily modified the system, removing dice rolls or a GM so that the deck of cards is all you need to play.

It’s a fun, light group storytelling game that I’m really happy with – please do check it out!

If anyone has a desire to run a really odd setting of AW, how about Apocalypse World — Ant Colony

I had a daft idea.

I had a daft idea.

I had a daft idea. Pared down to the utter basics, it goes: how about Babylon 5 using the standard AW playbooks, minimally hacked?

You’ve got a space station controlled by the Earth Union, but paid for by the Negari. You’ve got the oppressed but recently expanding Garn, and the sophisticated but declining Senetari, and watching from the corner, the mysterious and terrifyingly advanced Xoren. Or whatever other mix you come up with, it’s your game.

Your playbooks define your various species. Maybe the Garn player chose Gunlugger? So the Garn have natural armour as a species trait. As to actual hacking, I’d knock the Harm clock down to three or four segments. Maybe Barter represents Credibility. Ignore your own government and their demands (not “paying” them the Credibility they require) and you’re at risk of being replaced.

My real question here is: can this kind of diplomatic game with everyone on different sides work as a game to play together?

I’ve already posted a link to this in the Dungeon World Tavern but I thought I’d post it here as well since this is foundation of it all.

It’s called Zombieworld – The Streets of Atlanta and it borrows heavily from the Streets of Marienburg (the Warhammer hack) and the Streets of Mos Eisley (the Star Wars hack). Much credit to the minds behind these two excellent playsets.

Anyway, as you may have surmised, Zombieworld is a Walking Dead hack (I know, this kind of stuff has already been done to death) but it was fun to do and I look at it as good practice for anther upcoming hack of mine inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean.

Check it out. Hope you dig it, and my apologies if this isn’t the right venue for sharing it.
