One of my goals this year is to get Just Heroes finished and published in some form or other, but prior to that, I really need to do some playtesting of the current version of the game.

To facilitate this, I’m creating a playset based around 4 ready-to-go PCs, as I’ll typically only be fitting in a 3-4 hour game at the conventions I get to attend. Much as I want to practice the world-burning aspects, it’s the player response to the mechanics I really need to gauge, so I need a way to hit the ground running, instead of spending 50% of the session choosing & refining PCs and defining the city they share.

Here’s a peek at the first of the 4 playbooks for New Gods for an Old Town, where I’ve blended the origin+style playbooks into a single, two-sided page of text and graphics, designed to be tri-folded.

Man, has anyone here run Spirit of ’77 yet?

Man, has anyone here run Spirit of ’77 yet? I didn’t give it a second look when it was Kickstarting because I didn’t think I would like it, but after buying and browsing the PDFs I ordered hard copies. I like what I’ve read, now I need to see it in action. I’ve been wanting to do something Elmore Leonardy with *World mechanics for a while now, and I think this might be the right fit (minus the sci-fi elements).

I’m looking for a PbtA game where the PCs were a gang of thieves, pulling heists and expanding their turf in a very dark and gritty steampunk-esque world. The touchstones were Thief, Dishonored, and the Gentlemen Bastard series. Does anyone know this game?

So right now we’re working on organizing the text for AW2E and it means I’ve been looking through A LOT of PbtA games. I’m looking at how they present and organize themselves, who they presume their audience will be, how they communicate with that audience and how they address themselves to other audiences, and can I just say? Action Movie World is really good.

Here’s a bit from the author’s foreword:

“…Flatland Games is a small press, we know that you sought out ACTION MOVIE WORLD: FIRST BLOOD because you already like roleplaying games, not because you stumbled on it in your local bookstore.

“This is a stupid roleplaying game. That’s not to say that there’s not an examination of action movies going on in this book. [And it’s a sharp one. -VB] It is to say that this examination shouldn’t be foremost in your mind as you settle down for a game. Just be dumb when you’re playing this. Dumb and loud and happy.”

Hello everyone.

Hello everyone.

Hello everyone.

I have been working on a medieval hack of Apocalypse World called Kings. It is more similar to Game of Thrones than Dungeon World. The hack is focus on favours and intrigues and not much in adventures.

I’m really eager to hear some feedback.

I apologize in advance for my English mistakes. First, I’m not a native speaker and second it still needs proofread.

Thank you very much.

The hack is 99% ready. The following link you can download the book, playbooks, and moves.

I’m working on a paleolithic era hack, where the PCs are nomadic hunter-gatherers. Here’s a move for when the clan must undergo a journey, whether due to a lack of hunting or being chased away by danger.

When your clan journeys to a new place, roll+meat spent. *On a 12+, the journey is easy and relatively safe. *On a 10-11, the GM chooses one. *On a 7-9, the GM chooses two. *On a 6-, the fate of your clan is in jeopardy against an immediate threat.

What kinds of troubles might arise on the journey? Cold weather, food spoilage… Help me think up some more!

In all the Apocalypse World games I have been in (mostly as MC) we always used a fictional or at least unspecified place as the base of operations for the player characters.

Others have talked about having great success with using actual places instead.

For our 2016 game I decided to try this.

So our game is set at Seagirt Marine Terminal Baltimore

Will report back next week after we had our first session.

I might call this one Aportcalypse World…
