I wanted to ask permission before distrubiting (freely) a hack I have been working on for porting Shadowrun into The Sprawl.

I have tried to be very careful to not include anything in my hack that makes the game playable without owning The Sprawl AND a core Shadowrun book.

I plan on posting it mainly to a few Shadowrun and Sprawl social media sites and thats it. It will probably clock in at 12 to 20 pages, most of which is a new playbook, foci, amd revisions to a couple existing playbooks.

For the Major Advancement: Make a Second Character, how does this work?

For the Major Advancement: Make a Second Character, how does this work? Do they have two characters that they rotate in and out at will? If so, how do they earn XP and cred?

Otherwise, do they now have two characters in play at the same time? Or is this more of an MC’s personal interpretation?

Cutting Edge Russian Attack Software

Cutting Edge Russian Attack Software

Cutting Edge Russian Attack Software

After their first mission, two of the team members bought some new gear. The Pusher went to her Haas-Bioroid handlers and had dermal plating implanted (she’d taken a bullet while extracting Kurosawa and didn’t like it much), and the Hacker bought some “cutting edge Russian attack software”.

We discussed what that might be, and as it was rather late, I foolishly suggested a Manipulate program that granted +2 hold on a successful Manipulate Systems move. Seemed fine at the time.

Cut to the middle of the last mission. Between Console Cowboy, Programming On the Fly, and the improved Manipulate program, the Hacker has a whopping 6 hold on the Building Security node. I’m all for being a fan of the characters, but that is way too much and I’m already having trouble challenging the Hacker on their matrix runs.

So can people help me come up with an alternative program? I don’t want to give the 4 credits back and tell the player to pick something else. What about a Manipulate program that grants +1 hold even on a missed roll? Or a Manipulate program that also created 1 hold of Security on a 10+?

Corp Specific ICE

Corp Specific ICE

Corp Specific ICE

I’m currently MCing a game set in the Android: Netrunner universe. (We have four players including myself, all of whom play the LCG, and it seemed like a natural fit.) There haven’t been that many encounters between our Hacker and ICE, but I need to start using it way more, as the PC is wrecking shop in any server he gets into.

To add some Netrunner “flavor”, I’m thinking about making some Corp specific ICE. How ICE looks and behaves not only makes the game feel more Netrunner-y, it will also give the players clues about what Corp the characters are messing with. If they pay attention.

Haas-Bioroid ICE:

Whenever a piece of HB ICE executes a routine, the player loses 1 hold (if any) from either the Compromise Security or Manipulate Systems move.

Jinteki ICE:

Whenever a piece of Jinteki ICE executes a routine, damage an intruder’s cyberdeck (Lower one of the cyberdeck’s ratings by 1).

NBN ICE:

Whenever a piece of NBN ICE executes a routine, trace an intruder’s location (Trace +1).

Weyland ICE:

Whenever a piece of Weyland ICE executes a routine, corrupt an intruder’s program (Destroy an active program).

This means Crop specific ICE always gets an additional effect when it executes a routine. That might be too much. Maybe instead of the additional effect, the ICE should simply do an extra point of something when a specific routine is run. So Jinteki ICE would lower an intruder’s cyberdeck rating by an additional +1 if the MC chose that option.

Thoughts?

Hoping for some feedback on custom moves

Hoping for some feedback on custom moves

Hoping for some feedback on custom moves

I’ve read a lot of PBA stuff and played a decent amount, but I’ve never tried to write custom moves before. I was hoping for some feedback.

The first relates to one of the Corps in our game, a company that breeds and manufactures animals. I wanted a move to introduce the uncertainty and potential for mishap anytime your mission brings you into contact with an animal.

When an animal is getting in your way, roll +Cool

On a 10+, you deal with it without complication

On a 7-9 choose 1:

• There’s a commotion (advance the Legwork/Mission clock)

• You’re forced to take lethal action

• An ally must assist you

• It harries you, take -1 ongoing until you’re rid of it

I like the choices I’ve given here, but I’m not sure if this move is too generic or dry for players to be excited to roll it. Given there’s something a little alien about animals in any cyberpunk setting I wonder if there’s something I can do to ratchet up that feeling of uncertainty? Also I wonder if in practice the ‘It harries you’ choice will be the most commonly taken by a fair way

The second relates to another Corp, a private security firm. I wanted to give them a custom move to make them inherently more threatening than most combatants the players might encounter. I think they’re better trained and more coordinated, which is why a Move feels more appropriate than having them do more harm to characters.

When Argus Security attempt to detain, restrain or assault you, roll +Meat

On a 10+, they fail to gain the upper hand

On a 7-9, choose one:

• They relay info about you up the chain (advance the Legwork/Mission clock)

• They gain info about you for their database (advance the Argus Corporate clock)

• They bring their force to bear on you (take harm as established by the fiction)

• You’re cornered, pinned down or trapped

I think I’ve achieved my goal of making Argus Security more threatening, and I like the fact that the players get to choose an interesting variety of ways for them to be screwed. My only reservation is that this maybe looks a bit too similar to the Mix It Up basic move?

I signed up to GM some games at Acadecon in November and made some place-cards to keep track of various clocks (it’s a 4×6 card with a sprawl-style countdown clock under a title that says “The Sprawl”).

I’m thinking one for each player and then one for the Legwork/Action clocks.

If you’re intested, the PDF is available on my GitHub page at : https://github.com/charlesmoore99/Countdown/blob/master/Sprawl_Clocks_4x6.pdf

The ODG is at https://github.com/charlesmoore99/Countdown/blob/master/Sprawl_Clocks_4x6.odg

I’m going to use them with these inexpensive card holders I found on Amazon.

I’m seriously considering a sprawl-compatible hack focused on community not missions.

I’m seriously considering a sprawl-compatible hack focused on community not missions. So the world where your contacts live, where your sprawl characters crawl home to sleep in. Not mission based, more episodic drama than heist film.

Mechanically, it’d be AW gangs and holdings, Urban Shadow Debts and Sprawl Stats and Cyber/synth. Play would center around community storytelling, from the favela to the spires. It’s only a vertical klick after all 🙂

Is this something there’d be interest in?
