Instead of Serenity or the Millennium Falcon, you can fly the Normandy, or the Andromeda, or Moya from Farscape.

Your PCs can bring their community with them. They can have a fighter bay full of space fighters, or giant robots.

The new versions of ships rules will be more user friendly, more tied to the fiction, and more varied.

Version 2.4.1

21/08/2016: Removed Hooks mechanics to prevent negating Disadvantage and exploiting Foibles Advance farming.

Removed gaining Advances when a Foible is activated. Now Advances are gained when the player rolls a 6-. Foibles may be activated to make this more likely.

Added the Assist move, to give players a way to give each other Advantage, at the risk of a roll.

Rewrote Hooks to establish starting relationships between Crew Members, and generate starting Foibles for a new game.

Editing changes to numerous moves to remove references to old mechanics and add references to new mechanics.

24/08/2016: Removed the Hand and Reach ranges. Changed Overheat option/tag on weapons to be Discharged, using same terminology as Shields and Moves.

25/08/2016: Updated card images, updated entries for gear with correct tags. Added Mystic Weapon card.

Modified Skirmish Move to include discharging weapons to deal double Harm. Modified Fury Unleashed to still be relevant.

Changed the terminology for 10 day weeks from deca to dekim, and 20 day month from dodeca to ekosim.

28/08/2016: Rewritten Calamity to be more uniform in distribution, and have more interesting mechanical and fictional effects.

Added “Change Difficulty” rules to the Drifting section.

The current version of Impulse Drive, 2.3.3 is set for play testing. The biggest update is an editing pass on the first half of the text by editor Jim Jacobson, some additional text in the drifting section, and additional text on the flow of combat.

If you are interested in misfits and spaceships, and like stories similar to firefly, Farscape, killjoys, dark matter, and andromeda, and enjoy the PBTA system, check it out.

I’m still working away on Impulse Drive. I’ve added a lot of small refinements and explanations throughout the book, and I have the Handouts PDF with enough basics to play, though there are a few more tools I might list on an extra page for the Space Master.

I’m going to have a week off after next week, so I’ll be trying to get a few playtest games in if people are interested in trying it out.

This build has the rule book updated with changes to a lot of moves, and more moves added to the Archetypes. Modifications for cybernetic or bio-engineered upgrades have also been added.

The new book is created from the Google Doc to help minimize my workload when making changes.

It’s ready!

Impulse Drive is now in alpha testing! The following link has the rules and printouts necessary to play a game of misfits and spaceships and insurmountable debt using the PBTA engine.

I’ll be running playtest games over hangouts, skype, and/or roll20 over the next few weeks, and I invite others to run games themselves. These rules are free to distribute and play. If you have any questions about the rules, feel free to contact me and I’ll try to answer them as promptly as I can.
