Have any of you used the Optional Battle Moves much? I have been playing AW for about a year and a half now and have never MC-ed or played in a game that used it. Mostly cause it confuses and intimidates me. What are your thoughts and experiences? What is the greatest strength and weakness of these moves?

Re-wrote the questions list for Keep and Eye Out today. Let me know what you think of the change. :)

When you keep an eye out in a potentially charged situation, roll+mind. On a hit, you can ask the MC questions. Whenever you act on one of the MC’s answers, take +1. On a 10+, ask 3. On a 7–9, ask 1:

-What’s my best way in or out?

-Who or what here is not what they seem?

-What happened here recently?

-What here is the greatest danger to me?

-What is about to happen here?

-Who is pulling the strings here?

I can’t wait to play Liam my Aware investigative reporter. 🙂

Got the first draft of The Specter done today. Take a look and let me know what you think. I still need a Dying Move for the playbook and a proper picture if Tommy Rayburn has time, but the stand in should do for now. 🙂

Anyway, enjoy!

I was chatting with a friend who is pretty new to Apocalypse World and next week we’re playing together in a demo game. While chatting I thought to provide him with some advice and I was struck by how much what I casually said resonated with me. This is what Apocalypse World is about (at least in my eyes). Thanks Vincent!

Here’s what I said…

“My advice with Apoc World. Find one or two NPC’s and let yourself fall in love with them, as a player and a character. Once you care about someone the game totally clicks into gear. No one can hurt you in AW, outside of a few injuries and whatnot. But when you care about someone, you’re truly vulnerable. It’s art then.”

As my Star Wars World campaign comes to a close, my group and I are going to be starting a play-test campaign of Urban Shadows starting next week. My friend Sean Horwich has graciously offered to MC so I can play and see what the game is like from that side of the table. Plus this is his first time MC-ing a *world game and we’re all super stoked for the game. We have a Vamp, an Immortal, a Hunter, a Fae, and finally my Aware, Liam Mitchell. Investigative reporter who specializes in chasing down the ‘weird’ stories and covering them up. Because some things the world is just not ready to know about.

I’m excited to play a vanilla mortal in this game. I’ve had the chance to play a Vamp for a few sessions and it was all sorts of fun. She embraced corruption at break-neck speed and quickly became an anti-hero at best. With my Aware, I’m going to work real hard to keep corruption at bay, make the hard choices needed to keep him above the tide of darkness that struggles to take us all in Urban Shadows.

Here’s a pic of Liam.

Attended Gryphcon this past weekend in Guelph Ontario and ran 3 slots of Urban Shadows. It was a very fun experience with a lot of great players, almost all of which had no *World game experience. I learned a lot and need to put my thoughts and the player’s observations down on paper this week. All in all, I think it was widely enjoyed and I know I had a real blast.

Highlight of the weekend’s playtesting: half the group found a fairy princess who had been cast out of her realm and what did they do with her? Took her out for beers at a pub and then to the theatre to watch a RomCom, priceless!
